A dependable automatic WordPress backup captures both the site’s files and its database, keeps several recent copies somewhere beyond the web server, and gives you a clear way to restore them. Start by checking what your host already protects; add a backup plugin only if the host’s coverage, schedule, retention, or restore process does not meet your needs.

What a complete WordPress backup needs to include

A typical WordPress site backup has two distinct parts: its files and its database. Saving only the site directory usually misses the database, which stores posts, comments, links, and other site data. Treat the two parts as one restore set.

  • Files: WordPress core, themes, plugins, uploads, configuration, and any other files the site needs. The WordPress file guide highlights wp-config.php and the wp-content directory, which contains themes and plugins. Check the backup tool’s scope rather than assuming it includes every file or excludes only disposable cache and temporary files. WordPress: Backing Up Your WordPress Files
  • Database: The separate database export, commonly saved as .sql, .gz, or .bz2. Restoring database state requires importing that export.

Keep the database and files from the same backup point together. The WordPress handbook’s typical sequence is to back up the database before the files, then restore the files before importing the database. If database credentials change during a move, wp-config.php may also need updating. WordPress: Backing Up Your WordPress Database

Check your host’s backup and restore coverage first

Before setting up another system, open your hosting control panel and find its backup or restore area. Interfaces differ, so use your provider’s current instructions. Confirm each of the following:

Host controls may offer on-demand backups and restores, but available features and workflows depend on the provider. Learn WordPress: Backup Your WordPress Site

How often should you back up?

Choose a schedule based on how often the site changes and how much recent data you could afford to lose. WordPress’s Advanced Administration Handbook suggests weekly database backups for smaller sites with fewer posts and daily backups for high-activity sites. These are starting points, not a universal service-level rule. WordPress: Backing Up Your WordPress Database

A daily snapshot may leave too much data at risk on a store, membership site, booking site, or any site where database changes happen throughout the day. Consider how often the backup system can capture those changes and whether that interval suits your site. The cited WordPress guidance does not set one cadence for every such site.

A useful decision is: if the site stopped now, how many hours or days of new posts, orders, bookings, or account changes could you accept losing? Set the schedule to keep that exposure within your tolerance, subject to the frequency your host or chosen tool actually supports.

Keep recent backups in separate places

WordPress recommends keeping three to five recent backups in different locations, such as a host copy, cloud storage, and a copy downloaded to your computer. It also advises occasionally making a manual copy of automatic backups to check that the process is working. WordPress: Backing Up Your WordPress Database

Keep at least one copy outside the web server so it remains available if that server is unavailable or compromised. A downloaded copy on an external drive can provide an additional local archive, but it does not replace a separate off-server copy. Check that your retention settings leave enough recent restore points and that you can access the destination independently of the site.

Choose a host backup or plugin that fits your workflow

A host’s system may be the simplest choice when it covers files and database, retains enough history, and offers a restore route you can use. If it does not, a backup plugin can provide a scheduled workflow with controls for scope, retention, and destination. Learn WordPress demonstrates a plugin setup using those choices; exact options vary by tool. Learn WordPress: Backup Your WordPress Site

For example, the WordPress.org UpdraftPlus listing describes manual and scheduled backups and lists destinations including Dropbox, Google Drive, and Amazon S3-compatible storage; some other destinations are marked as paid-version options. Confirm the current plugin version, compatibility, feature tier, and destination support before relying on a particular configuration. UpdraftPlus on WordPress.org

The Jetpack VaultPress Backup listing describes cloud backups and one-click restores, but says use requires a paid Jetpack plan that includes Backup. It documents daily and real-time behavior by plan and says the plugin does not currently support WordPress multisite. Compare your available options on the factors that affect recovery, rather than choosing on the schedule label alone:

  • Does it capture both files and the database?
  • How frequently can it run, and can that frequency account for changes between snapshots?
  • How many restore points are retained, and are copies stored independently of the web server?
  • Can you restore if you cannot sign in to wp-admin?
  • Does it support your setup, including multisite or WooCommerce if relevant?
  • What storage, site-size, retention, or plan limits apply?

Set up the schedule and verify the recovery path

  1. Confirm coverage: In your host’s backup controls or plugin settings, verify that both the database and required files are selected. Check the file scope, especially wp-content and wp-config.php.
  2. Set frequency and retention: Choose an interval that fits how often the site changes and the loss you can tolerate. Set enough history to retain multiple recent restore points.
  3. Choose destinations: Keep a server-independent copy, such as cloud storage or a downloaded local archive, in addition to any host copy.
  4. Run or wait for a backup, then confirm it exists: Check the backup log or destination for both the files and database archive. Occasionally make a manual copy of an automatic backup to confirm you can retrieve it.
  5. Find the restore instructions before an emergency: Locate the host’s restore controls or the plugin’s recovery instructions. Where possible, test the process in a staging environment, or follow the provider’s current procedure. WordPress’s official materials recommend a restore path but do not prescribe a universal test interval or exact test procedure.

When restoring, use files and database from the same backup set. Follow the provider’s instructions for the restore mechanism; if you are moving the site and database credentials differ, check whether wp-config.php needs to be updated.
