To connect Outlook to Claude, use Claude’s Microsoft 365 connector with a work or school Microsoft 365 account. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator must first grant tenant consent; on Claude Team or Enterprise, the organization Owner must also enable the connector. Then connect it in Claude under Customize > Connectors. Personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live accounts are not supported by this connector.
This is different from the separate Claude for Outlook add-in, which runs inside Outlook and is described by Anthropic as a beta experience.
Before you connect: check your account and access
- Use a work or school Microsoft 365 account. It must be associated with a Microsoft Entra tenant. The connector does not support personal Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Live accounts.
- Arrange tenant consent. A Microsoft Entra Global Administrator must grant consent before users can connect.
- Check Claude organization settings. For Team and Enterprise, the organization Owner must enable Microsoft 365 under the organization’s Connectors settings. Free, Pro, and Max users do not need this owner-enablement step.
Anthropic’s setup instructions describe these requirements in its Microsoft 365 connection guide and connector setup guide.

- Have the administrator complete tenant consent. Ask a Microsoft Entra Global Administrator to grant the required one-time consent for the organization.
- Have the Claude Owner enable the connector if required. In a Team or Enterprise organization, the Owner should enable Microsoft 365 in the organization’s Connectors settings.
- Open Claude’s connector settings. In Claude, select Customize > Connectors.
- Choose Microsoft 365 and connect. Select Microsoft 365 > Connect, then sign in with the qualifying work or school Microsoft 365 account.
- Ask a question that needs Outlook information. For example, ask Claude to summarize an email conversation or find a message thread. Anthropic says the connector accesses Microsoft 365 when a prompt requires the connected information; it does not run background searches.
What Claude can access—and what it can change
Search and analysis
The connector can search Outlook email threads and conversations, read message content and metadata, and review calendar information. It can also work with Microsoft 365 services including SharePoint, OneDrive, and Teams. Claude’s access follows the signed-in user’s existing Microsoft 365 permissions: as Anthropic puts it, “You can only access data you can already see in Microsoft 365.” See the Anthropic connector documentation.

Sending messages and changing calendar events
Reading and analyzing information is distinct from taking action. Sending an email or managing calendar events depends on administrator-enabled write tools and additional consent and setup. If you want help composing a message without sending it, make that boundary explicit in your prompt—for example: “Draft a reply to the latest email from the vendor, but don’t send it.”
Turn access off
You can disable the connector for a conversation or disconnect it from Customize > Connectors. Anthropic says reconnecting does not require administrator approval again if tenant consent is still active.

Microsoft 365 connector or Claude for Outlook add-in?
Choose the connector when you want to ask Claude about work Outlook information from within Claude. Choose the separate Outlook add-in when you want Claude’s experience inside Outlook. Anthropic describes the add-in as a beta for inbox triage, drafting replies for you to send, and finding calendar availability. Microsoft’s certification listing says it supports Outlook 2016 or later on Windows and Mac, as well as Outlook on the web; it accesses mail and calendar data through Microsoft Graph and the Office.js Mailbox API when directed by the user. Availability and rollout may vary, so check the current Claude for Microsoft 365 information and Microsoft certification listing for the add-in before following client-specific setup instructions.

Troubleshooting connection problems
- You use a personal Outlook address: Outlook.com, Hotmail, and Live accounts are not eligible for the Microsoft 365 connector. You need a work or school Microsoft 365 account tied to an Entra tenant.
- Microsoft 365 is missing or connection is blocked: Confirm that the Global Administrator granted tenant consent. If you are in a Team or Enterprise organization, ask its Owner to enable the connector.
- Claude cannot find a message or calendar item: Check that the signed-in Microsoft 365 user can access it directly. The connector does not expand the user’s Microsoft permissions.
- Claude can draft but not send or update events: Write actions require administrator-enabled tools and the additional consent and setup; connection alone does not guarantee those actions are enabled.
