For most readers buying before October 28, 2026, the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024) is the strongest general-purpose choice in the available comparisons: it combines a 7-inch monochrome screen with adjustable warm light and IPX8 water resistance. Amazon says its battery lasts up to 12 weeks, a manufacturer estimate rather than an independent test result. A new Paperwhite is scheduled for October 28, so if you can wait, compare its price and independent reviews before deciding.
Which Kindle is best for most readers?
The 2024 Kindle Paperwhite is the best-supported all-round pick for readers who want a larger screen, adjustable warm light and water resistance without needing color or handwriting features. Amazon lists 16 GB of storage, IPX8 water resistance and up to 12 weeks of battery life; these are manufacturer specifications, not results from hands-on testing. Amazon’s Paperwhite identification guide provides the model specifications, while TechRadar’s Kindle guide also describes the Paperwhite as suitable for most readers.
That recommendation is time-sensitive. The 13th-generation Paperwhite is scheduled for October 28, 2026, and independent full reviews were still forthcoming in October coverage. If your current reader works and you are not in a hurry, waiting to compare the new model’s tested performance and price is sensible. Tom’s Guide’s launch coverage gives the reported release timing; WIRED’s Kindle guide says its review coverage will be updated after reviewing the new model.

Choose by the way you read
| Reader priority | Model to consider | What matters |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday reading, including by water | Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024) | 7-inch monochrome display, adjustable warm light, IPX8 water resistance, 16 GB and up to 12 weeks of battery life per Amazon. The battery figure is a manufacturer estimate. |
| Small size for travel and reading only | Kindle (11th Generation, 2024) | 6-inch display, adjustable front light, 16 GB and up to six weeks of battery life per Amazon. Amazon does not list IPX8 protection for this model. |
| Color covers, illustrations or highlights | Kindle Colorsoft | Color display. WIRED lists 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color; color is useful for certain material, but does not automatically make it a better all-round reader. |
| Handwriting, annotation or document work | Kindle Scribe | A larger, pen-enabled screen makes it the writing-oriented option. It is specialized rather than the default choice for novels; TechRadar’s comparison does not list it as waterproof. |
Amazon’s specifications for the 2024 Paperwhite and basic Kindle are in its Kindle model identification guide. Screen-size, Colorsoft resolution and model comparisons are covered by WIRED and TechRadar.

- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
When the smaller basic Kindle makes more sense
Choose the 2024 basic Kindle if portability matters more than a larger screen or water resistance. Its 6-inch display is an inch smaller than the 2024 Paperwhite’s 7-inch screen, and Amazon lists adjustable front lighting, 16 GB and up to six weeks of battery life. That battery duration is a manufacturer specification, not a measured result. Amazon’s guide does not list IPX8 protection for the basic model, so do not treat it as equivalent to the Paperwhite around water. Amazon’s model guide identifies the 2024 Kindle’s specifications; TechRadar’s editor also describes the basic model as a reading-only travel choice.
Is a color Kindle worth choosing?
Colorsoft is the specialist choice when color pages or highlights are important to what you read. It is not automatically superior for novels or other mostly black-and-white text: WIRED lists its color content at 150 ppi, compared with 300 ppi for black-and-white content. Choose it for the material you actually read in color, rather than assuming color alone makes it the best Kindle. TechRadar’s comparison lists Colorsoft as IPX8 water resistant. See WIRED’s Kindle comparison for the resolution figures and TechRadar’s model comparison for the water-resistance listing.

When to choose a Kindle Scribe
Consider Scribe if you want a large screen for writing, annotating or working with documents. Its pen support and larger format address a different need from compact, one-handed novel reading, and make it a specialized option rather than the default recommendation. TechRadar’s comparison does not list Scribe as waterproof. The reviewed buying guides establish its writing-oriented role but do not provide a comparable price figure here, so check the live listing in your marketplace before deciding.
Should you buy now or wait for the 2026 Paperwhite?
If you need a reader now, compare the live price of the 2024 Paperwhite with what is available in your country. If you can wait until after October 28, 2026, make the choice using independent reviews and the actual local price of the 13th-generation model, rather than launch claims alone. Tom’s Guide reported the scheduled date in October 2026 and said full reviews were forthcoming; WIRED likewise said it would update its guide after review. The 2026 basic Kindle is reported as available, while Paperwhite and Colorsoft availability around launch should be confirmed in the relevant marketplace. Tom’s Guide and WIRED cover the launch timing.

Prices, discounts and model availability vary by marketplace, and the guides do not establish one price that applies everywhere.
