Retro website design works best when the reference is specific, fits the subject, and helps visitors understand how to use the site. Three examples highlighted by Webflow show different ways to do that: a music-world collage, a Windows 3.1-inspired interface, and arcade-game imagery tied to asteroid mining. They are examples cited in Webflow’s guide, not independently tested for usability or business results; live designs may have changed since publication.

Three retro website examples that work

These examples take distinct approaches to nostalgia: one uses era-specific imagery, another turns an old interface into navigation, and the third connects an arcade reference to the company’s subject. The comparison describes Webflow’s published examples; it is not a formal usability evaluation.

Example Historical reference How it relates to the subject How the retro cues are used Usability approach described
Breakfast 1960s Hollywood and Laurel Canyon Webflow describes Breakfast as a Los Angeles creative music studio; the cues draw on music history. Faded sepia imagery and music-related collage elements, including a recording-studio switch and cassette, alongside modern fonts. The collage carries the aesthetic; the source does not detail specific navigation features.
Non-os Windows 3.1 The operating-system interface is the site’s concept. Simplified icons and a retro interface. Icons serve as links to pages, giving the nostalgic interface a functional role.
Astro Forge 1970s arcade games, including Asteroids (1979) Webflow describes Astro Forge as an asteroid-mining company, making a space arcade reference relevant to its subject. An arcade game resembling Asteroids and pixelated character imagery that jiggles on hover. Interaction reinforces the concept; the source does not provide a formal evaluation of navigation or usability.

Breakfast: make the collage belong to the brand

Breakfast’s faded imagery and studio-related objects suggest music-making and a recognizable cultural moment rather than retro styling for its own sake. Modern fonts provide a contemporary counterpoint. The lesson is not that sepia is universally effective, but that visual references become more legible when they connect to what an organization does.

Non-os: make the old interface do a job

Interaction designer Nilay Nishit modeled Non-os on Windows 3.1, with simplified icons serving as page links. Visitors encounter an old operating-system visual language, but the interface also communicates where to go. This is a particularly clear example of nostalgia functioning as navigation rather than merely decoration.

Astro Forge: connect the interaction to the subject

Webflow describes Astro Forge’s arcade game as resembling Asteroids, with pixelated character imagery that moves on hover. The space-game reference relates to the company’s asteroid-mining subject, while the interaction reinforces the playful concept. The description does not establish that the effects improve engagement or any business outcome.

What is retro website design?

Retro website design borrows visual language from an earlier period or design movement. “Retro” can mean very different things: Art Deco, 1990s web graphics, Y2K, 1950s retrofuturism, a 1970s revival, Art Nouveau, or pixel art. The Web Design Museum’s exhibition categories—including 1990s web design, Y2K, pixel art, and grunge—offer useful distinctions between references rather than treating every historical style as one look.

A coherent reference can shape a site’s typography, colors, shapes, lines, textures, imagery, and interface cues. It need not reproduce an old website literally. The aim is to create a recognizable visual system that suits the subject while keeping the site usable now.

How to create a retro website in 2026

1. Choose one clear reference

Decide which era, movement, or medium you are invoking before choosing visual effects. A defined reference helps prevent unrelated period cues from competing with one another. Mixing eras can be a deliberate choice, but visitors should be able to read it as a system rather than an accident.

2. Build a consistent visual vocabulary

Translate the reference into a small set of related choices: type styles, colors, shapes, textures, imagery, and interface details. The Web Design Museum’s categories can help distinguish, for example, Y2K from 1990s web design or grunge. Consistency makes the concept easier to recognize without requiring every element to imitate the past.

3. Keep navigation and content usable

The Webflow Team writes: “Retro websites imitate older design styles but prioritize modern navigation and functionalities.” Non-os shows one way to do this: retro icons also act as page links. Whichever visual language you choose, visitors should be able to identify links, understand available actions, and read the content without having to decode the aesthetic first.

4. Use effects to create hierarchy, not clutter

Webflow’s Y2K design guide describes glow, glitch, pixelated typography, glossy UI, bright bubbles or blobs, metallics, and neon as cues associated with that aesthetic. Its advice is to use effects selectively, keep body text visible, and avoid whole-page glitching that overwhelms the visitor. Treat those points as design guidance, not measured evidence of conversion or engagement outcomes.

5. Make the reference serve the subject

Ask whether a visitor could explain why the chosen era or motif fits the organization. Breakfast connects collage to a music identity; Astro Forge connects arcade imagery to space mining; Non-os makes the old interface itself part of the navigation concept. If the link is hard to explain, the reference may be distracting rather than clarifying.

6. Treat 2026 as context, not a rulebook

Webflow’s article on design trends to watch in 2026 discusses distinctive visual systems and vintage aesthetics combined with advanced UI. It presents trends as invitations to think about projects, not prescriptions. That supports a contemporary case for intentional visual distinction, but does not establish that retro design performs better.

What these examples do—and do not—show

  • They illustrate three different ways to use nostalgia: through imagery, through an interface, and through interaction.
  • Each has a discernible relationship between its reference and its subject, according to Webflow’s descriptions.
  • They do not establish that retro design increases conversions, engagement, sales, or SEO performance; no such performance statistic is provided in the cited material.
  • They are examples from a publisher’s guide, not independently verified usability tests. Their current live designs may differ from the versions described.
