Yes. Routers from different brands can share an Ethernet network connected through a switch. For a typical home network, keep one device as the main router and gateway; configure the second router in access-point (AP) mode if it is only extending Wi-Fi or adding Ethernet ports. A switch connects devices, but it does not coordinate multiple routers’ gateway or DHCP services.

What a switch does—and what it does not do

An Ethernet switch adds wired connections to a network. Connect it to the main router’s LAN side, then connect wired devices or other supported equipment to the switch. For example, NETGEAR’s Orbi guidance says to connect a switch to an Orbi router or satellite, not directly to the modem: NETGEAR Orbi switch setup.

The switch does not decide which router is the gateway, assign IP addresses, or resolve competing DHCP settings. Those jobs depend on how the routers are configured. So the brands do not need to match, but the network roles and wiring do need to be right.

Choose the role for each router

Main router: gateway and DHCP

Choose one router to handle the network’s gateway functions. It typically connects upstream to the modem or ISP gateway and manages the home network. The exact arrangement depends on your ISP equipment and router settings.

Second router: access point, if it is extending the existing network

If the second router is there to provide Wi-Fi or extra wired access on the same network, use its documented AP mode when available. In this arrangement, the existing main router remains the gateway. How to connect the cable—and which port to use—varies by model, so follow that router’s manual rather than assuming every device uses the same port.

AP mode can disable some router features. NETGEAR’s documentation, for example, describes feature changes for its models in AP mode; those details should not be generalized to other manufacturers: NETGEAR: What is AP Mode? TP-Link likewise explains that Deco’s router and AP modes change which device serves as gateway: TP-Link: How to set up Deco to work in AP mode.

How to connect routers from different brands

  1. Pick the main gateway. Decide which device will handle routing and DHCP for the network.
  2. Configure the second device for its intended job. For Wi-Fi or port expansion on the same network, enable the manufacturer’s AP mode if supported.
  3. Connect the switch to the main network. Use the main router’s LAN connection, then connect the second device as its manual specifies. Do not connect a switch straight to the modem unless the ISP or equipment instructions specifically call for that topology.
  4. Check connectivity. Confirm that the second device and wired clients have link, receive an IP address, and use the intended default gateway and DHCP source.

Leaving two devices in router mode can create overlapping gateway or DHCP behavior, depending on their settings and how they are connected. That does not mean every two-router arrangement fails: some networks deliberately use multiple routed segments. But if your goal is one ordinary home network, one gateway with the other device in AP mode is usually the clearer arrangement.

Special case: mesh systems and Ethernet backhaul

Mesh products can have their own wiring rules, and those rules may change with operating mode. NETGEAR says to place a switch downstream of an Orbi router or satellite when adding wired devices: NETGEAR: Can I connect a switch to my Orbi system? TP-Link warns that Deco satellites in router mode should connect downstream of the main Deco to avoid a network loop; the wiring options differ in AP mode: TP-Link: Can I connect my Deco to a switch?

Do not assume that one mesh brand’s diagram applies to another brand’s kit. Follow the product-specific instructions for the main unit, satellites, and switch placement. TP-Link lists the TL-SG108 among switches verified for Deco Ethernet backhaul: TP-Link Deco switch guidance. That example is a compatibility reference for that feature, not a guarantee for every router-and-switch combination.

When VLAN settings matter

For a basic home network with ordinary wired clients, VLAN configuration often is not part of the setup. If you use a managed switch or need tagged traffic for a specific service or network design, the router, switch, and access points must agree on VLAN IDs and on which ports carry tagged or untagged traffic.

NETGEAR distinguishes access ports from trunk ports in its VLAN guidance and notes that 802.1Q tag support varies by device: NETGEAR: VLANs and managed-switch configuration. Its statement that most home routers do not support 802.1Q tagging is a general guideline, not proof about every model. Check the specifications for the exact equipment you own. An unmanaged switch does not offer the same VLAN controls as a managed switch.

If the connection does not work

  • No link light: Check power, cables, and the selected switch and router ports.
  • Device has no usable IP address: Check that the intended DHCP server is active and that the second router is configured for the selected role.
  • Device reaches the network but not the expected gateway: Check the default gateway and whether more than one router is providing gateway or DHCP services.
  • Only a VLAN-dependent service fails: Verify VLAN IDs and tagged or untagged settings on each relevant managed-switch port, and confirm device support.
  • Mesh nodes disconnect or form a loop: Recheck the mesh maker’s wiring diagram for the current operating mode.

These checks follow from the documented roles of routers, switches, and VLAN ports; they do not certify a particular combination. Firmware, ISP gateway configuration, and topology can all affect the result.

Do the router and switch brands have to match?

No. The sources document ordinary switch use and specific mode or mesh behaviors, but they do not certify every cross-brand combination. Compatibility depends less on matching logos than on the devices’ supported features, correct operating modes, and wiring. Check the manuals for your exact models, especially when using mesh backhaul or VLANs.
