To turn on Voice Isolation, open Control Center while using a supported call or recording app, tap that app’s controls, then select Voice Isolation in the microphone or audio/video mode controls. It prioritizes your voice and blocks ambient sound. The setting applies to the app you’re using and remains selected for that app until you change it.
Turn on Voice Isolation on iPhone
- Start or join a call, or open a supported recording app. Some apps let you select the mode before you begin.
- Swipe down from the iPhone’s top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the active app’s controls.
- Tap Voice Isolation in the microphone or audio/video mode controls.
Apple documents the setting as app-specific: choosing it in one app does not turn it on globally for the iPhone. It stays selected for that app until you change the mode. See Apple’s instructions for Voice Isolation, Wide Spectrum, and Automatic Mic Mode.
Which iPhone apps and iOS versions support it?
Availability depends on what you’re doing, not just your iPhone model. Apple lists iPhone XR, iPhone XS models, and later among supported devices, but third-party apps must also support the controls.

| Activity | Minimum iOS version for Voice Isolation | Availability notes |
|---|---|---|
| FaceTime audio or video and certain third-party calling apps | iOS 15 | Support in third-party apps depends on the app. |
| Phone calls | iOS 16.4 | Wide Spectrum is not available for phone calls. |
| Voice Memos and certain third-party audio or video recording apps | iOS 26 | Support in third-party apps depends on the app. |
These are the activity-specific requirements Apple gives for Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum; they are not a promise that every compatible app exposes every mode. Apple’s current guidance is in its Mic Mode support article.

Choose the microphone mode that fits the situation
- Voice Isolation: Choose it when you want speech prioritized and ambient sounds blocked.
- Wide Spectrum: Choose it when surrounding sounds, music, or other voices should be retained along with the speaker. It is not available for phone calls.
- Standard: Uses standard voice processing.
- Automatic: Available with iOS 18 or later. Apple’s example is that it uses Voice Isolation for calls through the receiver and Standard for speakerphone calls.
Apple describes what each mode is intended to do but does not provide a measured noise-reduction or speech-intelligibility result. Treat the modes as processing choices, not a guaranteed improvement under every acoustic condition.
Why Voice Isolation may be missing
- Check the iOS version for the activity. Phone calls need iOS 16.4 or later; FaceTime and certain third-party calls need iOS 15 or later; Voice Memos and certain recording apps need iOS 26 or later.
- Check the app. Third-party app support is conditional. The controls may not appear in an app that does not expose a supported microphone mode.
- Open the controls during the activity. Start or join the call, or enter the supported recording app, then open Control Center and tap the active app’s controls. Some apps also allow mode selection before a call or recording.
- Confirm you are looking in the app controls. Voice Isolation is not a general iPhone-wide switch; it is selected from the active app’s microphone or audio/video controls.
Voice Isolation does not apply to Local Capture recordings
Local Capture is a separate recording workflow. Apple’s iOS 27 iPhone User Guide states that Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum do not apply to a Local Capture recording. You can edit the recording afterward to adjust its sound. Local Capture files are saved in Files, in Downloads by default unless you choose another location. See Apple’s guide to improving audio and recording video calls.

Voice Isolation and call recording are separate features
Turning on Voice Isolation does not enable call recording. Apple says call-recording availability varies by country and region, and the feature is unavailable in some locations. Before recording, make sure the other participant is willing: Apple says both participants hear an audio notice when recording starts. Recordings are saved to the Call Recordings folder in Notes. Transcripts are available only in select regions and languages. Details are in Apple’s call recording and transcription guide.
Optional microphone input controls
With iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1, Apple says input gain can be adjusted for supported wired microphones and devices, including EarPods with USB-C. This is an optional input control, not a prerequisite for Voice Isolation; Apple does not require an external microphone to use the mode. See Apple’s Mic Mode guidance.
