A delay is not a rotation fix unless the camera’s orientation state changes and the preview or image output becomes upright. When a CameraX preview stays upside down after a 180-degree turn, check the display rotation, each use case’s targetRotation, and— for analysis frames—imageProxy.imageInfo.rotationDegrees. Then repeat the same rotation with and without the proposed change and compare the logged values and visible result.
Why a CameraX preview can stay upside down
CameraX has several rotation values that describe different things. Android’s display rotation is the value returned by Display.getRotation(). The camera sensor has its own orientation. A use case’s targetRotation specifies the rotation associated with the device’s natural orientation, while image rotation metadata tells the consumer how many clockwise degrees are needed to align image data with that target.
These values are related, but they are not interchangeable. If the display changes orientation while a use case retains an old target rotation, the preview or processed image may no longer appear upright. The CameraX rotation guide explains the distinctions and shows ways to update use-case rotation.
What to inspect before changing the code
First establish how the app handles orientation. Does it support portrait and both landscape directions? Is the Activity locked to an orientation, recreated on configuration changes, or configured to handle those changes itself? An Activity staying alive does not necessarily mean the display rotation stayed the same.

For each relevant use case—Preview, ImageAnalysis, and ImageCapture—record its current targetRotation. In an ImageAnalysis analyzer, also log imageProxy.imageInfo.rotationDegrees. Compare those readings with the current display rotation and with the orientation your rendering or image-processing code expects. If output image rotation is enabled, include that setting in the comparison: metadata and already-rotated output should not be treated as the same input.
Android’s official rotation examples demonstrate updating ImageAnalysis and ImageCapture target rotation with an OrientationEventListener or a DisplayListener. Choose the approach that fits the app’s orientation and Activity behavior. A device can rotate 180 degrees without an Activity recreation, so code that updates rotation only when the Activity is recreated may miss a transition.

How to prove whether a waiting change works
A wait can alter timing, but timing alone does not show that CameraX received a new target rotation or that the resulting image is upright. To test a proposed delay or rotation update, capture the same observations at each step:
- Record the starting state. Log display rotation, each relevant use case’s
targetRotation, and the Activity lifecycle or configuration callbacks. - Make a controlled turn. Rotate through the same transition each time, including the direct landscape-to-reverse-landscape or portrait-to-reverse-portrait turn that triggers the problem.
- Record frame metadata. For ImageAnalysis, log
imageProxy.imageInfo.rotationDegreeswith the frame and note whether output image rotation is enabled. - Check the actual result. Verify whether the live preview is upright and, separately, whether an ImageCapture result is upright. A correct preview does not prove that analysis or captured output is correct.
- Repeat with and without the change. Use the same device, CameraX version, app settings, and orientation sequence. Compare the logs and results, not just whether the bug seemed to disappear once.
This protocol distinguishes a missed rotation update from a delay that merely changes when frames arrive. It also helps isolate whether the issue is limited to Preview, ImageAnalysis, or ImageCapture.

Why the 180-degree case deserves a separate check
A 180-degree turn can leave the Activity running while the display changes orientation. In an issue for Google’s Jetpack Camera App, a report describes an upside-down preview after rotating between landscape and reverse landscape when orientation was unlocked; the report says there was no configuration change or Activity recreation and points to handling display changes. That example makes a missing rotation update worth checking, but it does not establish the cause of every upside-down preview.
A separate CameraX Developers discussion describes an ImageAnalysis orientation problem after 180-degree phone rotations with output image rotation enabled. It discusses updating targetRotation when physical orientation changes without an Activity restart. Treat that report as a useful diagnostic example, not a guarantee that all devices or app configurations behave alike.

Keep the analyzer from creating a separate stall
Close every ImageProxy after processing, including error and early-return paths. The AndroidX ImageAnalysis analyzer documentation warns that failing to close frames can block the image pipeline. A pipeline stall can look like a rotation or preview failure, even though it is a separate problem.
