The files are usually still in the image. A Docker mount at the same path takes precedence, so the container shows the mounted volume’s contents instead of the image directory underneath. A non-empty volume can therefore make files appear to vanish without deleting them.
Why the image files disappeared from view
Think of a mount as placing one directory’s view over another. If an image contains files at /app/data and a volume is mounted at /app/data, the container sees the volume at that path. When the volume already has content, that content obscures the image’s files. Docker compares the effect to mounting a USB drive over a directory on a Linux host. Docker’s volume documentation describes this behavior.
“Obscured” is not the same as “deleted”: the image’s files remain in the image filesystem, but that mounted container view does not show them. Docker documents recreating the container without the mount as the straightforward way to reveal them.

Check what is mounted and where
Before changing or removing anything, identify the mount’s source, type, and destination. The destination is the container path that gets overlaid; the source tells you which files or volume supply the visible contents. Docker’s --mount syntax makes these details explicit for both volumes and bind mounts. See Docker’s container-running examples.

docker run --mount type=volume,src=my-volume,dst=/app/data IMAGE
In this example, my-volume supplies the view at /app/data. A bind mount instead uses a host path as its source. Check the container’s configured mounts and confirm that the target is the directory where the expected files should appear. Do not remove or prune a volume until you know what it contains and whether the application relies on it.
What happens when the volume is empty?
A mount over an image directory does not always start with an empty-looking target. By default, when Docker mounts a new or empty volume over a directory containing files, Docker copies those files into the volume. The populated volume then supplies the view at the target. The volume-nocopy option disables that initial copy. Docker documents both the copy behavior and the option.

This initialization rule is separate from what happens with a volume that already contains data: a non-empty volume presents its existing contents and obscures what lies beneath. A Dockerfile’s VOLUME instruction declares a mount point; Docker’s reference says a newly created volume is initialized with data from that location in the image. See the Dockerfile reference.

Reveal the image’s original directory
If you need to confirm or use the files packaged in the image, recreate the container without the mount at that target. Docker says there is no straightforward way to remove the mount from a running container to reveal the directory beneath it. Recreating without the mount changes the container configuration; it does not require deleting the volume.

Keep the mount and put the required files in it
If the application needs persistent data at the mounted path, leave the volume in place and explicitly seed it with the files the application requires. The image directory will remain obscured while the mount is present, so the needed files must be available through the volume’s own contents.
Which mount type fits the job?
Choose by where the data should live, whether it needs to persist, and whether the host must access it. Docker’s storage overview describes these mount categories and their uses. Docker Storage.

| Mount type | Useful when | Persistence and access |
|---|---|---|
| Docker volume | Data should persist independently of a container or be shared among containers. | Managed by Docker; persists after container removal. |
| Bind mount | The same host files need to be accessible from the host and container. | Direct link to a host path; host and container processes can modify the mounted files. |
| tmpfs mount | Data is temporary and should not be persisted to disk. | Stored in host memory; lost when the container stops or the host reboots. |
| Image mount | A container needs read-only files packaged in another image. | Read-only and requires the containerd image store. |
Keep volume data safe during cleanup
Volumes persist beyond the lifecycle of a container, so removing a container does not by itself remove a named volume. Inspect the source and its contents before cleanup; deleting the mount configuration and deleting the volume are different actions. Docker’s volume guide explains volume persistence and management.
