On Apple TV 4K, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home, select AirPlay, then switch it on or off. Turning it off prevents devices from streaming to that Apple TV; to stop only one active stream or screen mirror, end it from the device that started it.
Turn AirPlay on or off on Apple TV 4K
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Select AirPlay and Apple Home.
- Select AirPlay, then turn the setting on or off.
Apple describes this switch as controlling whether devices can stream content to the Apple TV 4K. See Apple’s AirPlay and Apple Home settings guide.
Limit who can connect without turning AirPlay off
If you want AirPlay to remain available but want to restrict access, go to Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home > Allow Access. Apple lists these options:
- Everyone
- Anyone on the Same Network
- Only People Sharing This Home
- Require Password
These access controls are separate from the AirPlay on/off switch. Apple’s AirPlay password help covers Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD as well as a separate path for Apple TV (3rd generation), so labels and settings are not identical across every model.

Stop one active stream or screen mirror
Turning AirPlay off on Apple TV affects whether devices can stream to the receiver. To end a single session while leaving AirPlay available, stop it from the sending device instead. On iPhone or iPad, end mirroring from Control Center; on Mac, use Screen Mirroring or the AirPlay menu. Apple documents these controls in its guide to streaming to Apple TV 4K.
If Apple TV does not appear as an AirPlay destination
- Check that AirPlay is turned on in Apple TV settings.
- Check that the sending device and Apple TV meet Apple’s network and compatibility conditions. Apple notes that the devices may need to be connected to the same network.
The detailed settings path above applies to Apple TV 4K. Apple’s documentation also covers Apple TV HD and Apple TV (3rd generation), but available features and labels can vary by model and region.
