A video graphics card—more commonly called a graphics card or video card—is hardware that processes graphics and video. In a desktop PC, a discrete graphics card is a separate board that plugs into the motherboard and contains a graphics processing unit (GPU) plus the components needed to connect it to the computer. The GPU is the processor on the card, not technically the whole card, though people often use the terms interchangeably.

What is a GPU, and what does it do?

A GPU is a processor designed to handle many calculations in parallel. That makes it well suited to graphics work, which often involves processing large sets of visual data. A GPU can render images and video and accelerate graphics effects and games. Modern GPUs can also be used for suitable parallel workloads beyond graphics, including scientific computing, analytics, video production, and AI. Intel’s GPU explainer describes the GPU as a complement to the CPU, rather than a replacement for it.

The CPU and GPU have different roles: the CPU handles a broad range of computing tasks, while the GPU accelerates work that benefits from parallel processing. Software and the task determine whether a GPU can help; it does not make every computer operation faster. Intel’s CPU-versus-GPU overview explains this distinction.

What is the difference between a GPU and a graphics card?

The GPU is the graphics processor. A discrete graphics card is a larger add-in board that contains a GPU and supporting components. On a desktop PC, the board plugs into the motherboard. In casual conversation, “GPU” is often used to mean the entire card; technically, the terms refer to different things. Intel and Microsoft explain the hardware and terminology.

Integrated graphics versus a discrete graphics card

Graphics processing can be integrated into a computer platform or provided by a separate discrete GPU. These are broad tendencies, not guarantees for every computer or graphics processor.

Feature Integrated graphics Discrete graphics
Physical arrangement Built into the computer platform; it is not a separate desktop add-in card. A distinct GPU on a separate board; desktop cards plug into the motherboard.
Typical workloads Often suitable for lighter graphics tasks, including some gaming, light video editing, and photo work. Often better suited to demanding work such as intensive gaming, design, and photo or video editing.
Power, size, and cooling Generally more power-efficient and can support thinner, lighter laptops. Typically larger and more power-hungry, producing more heat and often requiring dedicated cooling.

Microsoft outlines these general trade-offs in its GPU overview; Intel also discusses the physical distinction in its GPU explainer. A separate card is not necessary for every user: the right arrangement depends on the workload and the computer.

What does “video graphics card” mean?

“Video graphics card” is understandable, but “graphics card” and “video card” are more common terms. Microsoft notes that GPUs are also known as video cards or graphics cards. In precise usage, use “GPU” for the processor and “graphics card” or “video card” for a discrete board.

What is a video BIOS?

A video BIOS (VBIOS) is firmware associated with a graphics card or an integrated graphics controller. Intel says it provides video-related functions that programs use to access video hardware. It is a firmware component, not another name for the GPU or the graphics card. Intel Support’s VBIOS FAQ, last reviewed February 12, 2025, gives further detail.
