For Google Search, GEO is not a separate technical discipline that replaces SEO. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use its core Search systems, and that the usual SEO fundamentals still apply. What changed is how some results are assembled and shown—and how site owners can now inspect impressions from those AI features.

What GEO means—and what it does not

GEO, or generative engine optimization, is a broad label for trying to make content visible or useful in AI-generated answers. It is not a single, standardized Google ranking system. For Google specifically, the key question is whether a page is eligible for Search and useful enough for Google’s systems to select as a supporting link—not whether it carries a special “GEO” signal.

This distinction is platform-specific. Google’s guidance describes Google Search; it does not establish how ChatGPT, Perplexity, or every other answer engine selects sources. Claims about those systems need evidence about those systems.

What changed in Google Search

Some searches now produce synthesized answers

Google describes AI Overviews and AI Mode as using Search’s core ranking systems to find relevant, current information, then generating responses with supporting links. Its documentation also describes query fan-out: the system can pursue related searches across subtopics rather than treating a query as one isolated phrase. The result can be an exploratory, synthesized response instead of only a conventional list of ranked links.

AI Overviews are shown when Google’s systems determine that an AI response adds value beyond classic Search. AI Mode is designed for further exploration, reasoning, and complex comparisons. Google says the models and techniques can differ, so responses and links may vary. That describes a change in the search experience; it does not reveal a guaranteed formula for earning a citation.

Google now reports AI-feature impressions in Search Console

Google Search Console Help says the Generative AI performance report covers impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode and provides page, country, date, and device views. Google said the report had rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. That date describes report availability, not a measured increase in traffic or visibility.

Interpret the report with its aggregation limits in mind. The chart aggregates at property level unless a URL filter is applied, and table totals can differ as the selected dimension changes. Google also notes that the latest data may be preliminary and that the report is subject to usual reporting limits.

What did not change: eligibility and useful SEO work

Google Search Central says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet to be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility is not a promise that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page. Google’s guidance continues to emphasize crawl access, internal links, readable text, page experience, and structured data that accurately reflects visible content when that data is appropriate.

Google says there are no extra technical requirements or special optimizations for these generative Search features. It does not require special AI text files such as llms.txt, additional markup, special schema.org data, or dividing content into tiny passages (“chunking”) to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Structured data can still matter for existing Search features; it is not a newly required GEO signal.

Content quality remains material. Google emphasizes unique, useful content and first-hand experience, and warns that scaled pages produced without added user value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. Using AI to assist with writing does not remove the need for accuracy, relevance, quality, and human fact-checking.

SEO and GEO compared without a false either-or

Question SEO in Google Search GEO claims for Google AI features
Where does the result appear? Classic web results and other Search features. Generated responses in AI Overviews or AI Mode, which may include supporting links.
What makes a page eligible? Google’s standard Search requirements, including indexing and eligibility to appear with a snippet. The same Search eligibility; Google documents no additional technical eligibility requirement for these features.
What optimization is supported? Crawlability, internal linking, readable pages, useful content, and appropriate structured data consistent with visible content. Google says no special AI files, markup, schema, or passage chunking is required. Claims that these are Google requirements are unsupported by its guidance.
What can Search Console measure? Conventional Search performance data. The Generative AI performance report documents AI-feature impressions with page, country, date, and device views, subject to aggregation and reporting limits.
What establishes business impact? Search data can show exposure and clicks; analytics can measure outcomes such as conversions and time spent. AI-feature impressions alone do not establish qualified visits, conversions, or revenue. Pair Search Console with analytics for those outcomes.

The distinctions in the table summarize Google Search Central and Search Console Help guidance accessed October 7, 2026. They should not be generalized to other answer engines.

What the numbers do—and do not—say

This article does not present publisher-specific “our numbers.” No site-level Search Console exports, analytics data, page cohort, or comparison window are available to support a before-and-after result. The title therefore does not promise first-party figures, and no claim is made that GEO caused a change in traffic or conversions.

Google said in a 2025 company post that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year” and that average click quality had increased. That is Google’s aggregate account, not an independent finding for every publisher, a causal estimate of AI features’ effect, or a substitute for a site’s own data.

Google Search Console’s AI report is impression-focused. Impressions can show that a result was exposed within the reported AI features, but they do not by themselves tell you whether a visitor arrived, converted, or generated revenue. To assess those outcomes, use the Search Console data alongside analytics, as Google recommends.

How to measure a site’s change responsibly

  1. Define the outcome first. Decide whether the question is about impressions, clicks, sessions, conversions, or revenue. Do not treat one as a proxy for another.
  2. Fix the comparison scope. Record the Search Console property, URL cohort, countries, device mix, and exact date windows. Keep the compared periods as like-for-like as possible.
  3. Separate AI-feature exposure from other performance data. Note what the Generative AI report includes and which aggregation applies. Use a URL filter when the question is about particular pages, and account for dimension-dependent table totals.
  4. Connect exposure to outcomes. Compare Search Console findings with analytics measures such as sessions or conversions, using consistent page and time scopes where possible.
  5. Record competing explanations. Annotate site changes, seasonality, algorithm updates, campaigns, and changes in country or device mix. A before-and-after difference alone does not show that GEO caused it.
  6. State the limits. Identify preliminary or incomplete report data and distinguish descriptive association from evidence that supports a causal conclusion.

These checks make a site-level comparison interpretable; they do not guarantee that a short time window or an aggregate report can isolate the effect of any one Search feature.

How to evaluate GEO advice

Google Search Central cautions that no third-party tool has access to Google’s internal ranking or AI systems. Treat claims of a guaranteed citation recipe, secret ranking factor, or required Google GEO markup skeptically. Tools may still help with practical tasks such as tracking a defined set of queries or reviewing a site, but those capabilities are not proof of privileged access to Google’s systems.

For Google Search, the defensible approach is to maintain sound SEO eligibility and publish distinctive, useful, accurate content. Treat AI-feature visibility as an additional surface to measure—not a reason to abandon SEO or adopt unsupported technical “hacks.”
