For common desktop playback tasks, VLC’s documented shortcuts include Space to play or pause, F for fullscreen, Esc to leave fullscreen, and M to mute. Treat these as starting defaults rather than guarantees: bindings can vary by platform, VLC build, and personal settings. Check the Hotkeys panel in your installation whenever a key does not behave as expected.
Where to find VLC keyboard shortcuts
Open VLC’s preferences and select Hotkeys to inspect the bindings in your installed copy. VideoLAN’s FAQ gives the path as Preferences → Interface → Hotkeys; labels can differ between versions. This panel is also where you can change a binding. Some actions may require enabling advanced options before they appear.
VLC describes its hotkeys as usable even when the player does not have focus, but that behavior can depend on the kind of hotkey and how it is configured. If a shortcut is ignored, confirm the action’s assigned key in the Hotkeys panel and check whether the intended media is selected. The documentation identifies backward and forward jump actions but does not establish a universal jump duration. Plus and minus key behavior can also depend on keyboard layout. If either is inconvenient or unavailable, inspect the corresponding action in Hotkeys and assign a key that suits your keyboard.

Display and snapshots
Fullscreen
Press F to enter fullscreen and Esc to exit it, according to VLC’s documented hotkeys. If these do not work in your build, use the View menu or confirm their current assignments in Hotkeys.
Capture a snapshot
VideoLAN’s FAQ lists Ctrl+Alt+S for Windows, Linux, and Unix, and Command+Alt+S for Mac OS X. You can also choose Video → Snapshot. To change the snapshot binding, use Preferences → Interface → Hotkeys; advanced options may be needed to expose the snapshot action. The snapshot directory is set under Preferences → Video. Sound and synchronization
Volume and mute
The documented defaults are Ctrl+Up to raise volume, Ctrl+Down to lower it, and M to mute or unmute. The volume mapping should not be assumed to apply on every operating system or customized installation; confirm it in Hotkeys if it is unavailable.

Audio delay
How do you adjust audio delay? The available documentation does not support one universal shortcut: a Windows FAQ mirror describes J and K in 50 ms increments, but other guidance differs or may describe another version. Treat that mapping as Windows-specific and dated, not a general VLC guarantee. In your installation, open Hotkeys and locate the audio-delay actions to see their actual keys and step behavior. When a shortcut does nothing
- Open Preferences → Hotkeys and verify the key assigned to the action you want.
- Check that the relevant media or playlist item is selected and that VLC is in the expected focus or global-hotkey state.
- Consider whether the key is affected by your keyboard layout or conflicts with another binding.
- Change the binding in Hotkeys if needed, then test it in the same playback context.
Shortcut behavior can differ with operating system, VLC version, user customization, and whether a binding is configured as a regular or global hotkey.
