If Windows 11 does not recognize an external hard drive after you force-ejected it, first find out where detection stops: check whether the USB device appears in Device Manager, then whether the disk and its volumes appear in Disk Management. Try connection checks and a restart before changing disk settings. If Windows says the disk is Not Initialized, RAW, unallocated, or needs formatting, do not initialize or format it if you need the files.

A force eject may be related, but it is not proof of what caused the problem. Microsoft advises safely removing external drives to avoid data loss; its guidance does not establish that force eject causes any particular later failure.

Start with low-risk connection checks

1. Reconnect the drive and inspect its cable

Disconnect the drive, check that the cable is seated at both ends, then reconnect it. Look for obvious cable damage or a power issue. If you test another cable, make sure it matches the drive’s connector and supports data transfer and any power requirements. This is a basic diagnostic check, not a guaranteed fix.

2. Try another compatible USB port or computer

Connect the drive to a different USB port on the same computer, preferably without a hub or adapter if one is in use. If possible, test it on another computer. If it works elsewhere, that is evidence the issue may be specific to the original computer or port; it does not by itself identify the cause.

3. Restart Windows with the drive disconnected

Disconnect the drive, restart Windows, and reconnect it after the desktop loads. Restarting is a low-impact general check; Microsoft’s cited troubleshooting pages do not promise that it will resolve this specific problem.

Check whether Windows detects the USB device

4. Find the drive or USB error in Device Manager

  1. Search Start for Device Manager and open it.
  2. Look under relevant categories, such as Disk drives and Universal Serial Bus controllers, for the drive or a device with a warning icon.
  3. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  4. On the General tab, read Device status and record any error code before changing settings.

Microsoft’s guidance for an unrecognized USB device directs users to check Device Manager and follow the resolution for the displayed code. A device-reported issue or a driver issue may be involved; the code helps narrow the next step. See Microsoft’s USB device troubleshooting guidance and its Device Manager error-code instructions.

5. Refresh device detection only when appropriate

For certain Device Manager error codes, Microsoft recommends uninstalling the affected device and then selecting Action > Scan for hardware changes to reinstall it. Do not remove drivers as a universal first step. If Windows requests a driver or the code-specific guidance calls for one, follow the hardware manufacturer’s instructions.

Check the disk and volume state

6. Open Disk Management

Right-click Start and select Disk Management, or press Windows key + R, enter diskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Check whether the external disk appears in the lower pane, then note its disk status and the status of each volume. Microsoft says Disk Management looks and works the same in Windows 10 and Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance.

The two checks locate different failure points: if Device Manager does not show the drive or a related USB device, focus on the connection and Device Manager status. If the device is present there but the disk does not appear in Disk Management, Windows has not exposed a usable disk there. If the disk appears, use the state shown in Disk Management to decide whether one of the following actions applies.

7. Bring a previously configured Offline disk Online

If Disk Management identifies the drive as Offline and it is a disk you had already configured, right-click the disk label and select Online, if available. Do not treat an unfamiliar disk layout or a disk without a recognized layout as a known-good Offline disk; investigate before changing its state.

8. Assign a letter to an eligible volume that lacks one

If Disk Management shows a usable volume without a drive letter, right-click that volume and choose Change Drive Letter and Paths, then add a letter that is not already in use. This can make a detected volume accessible in File Explorer; it will not repair a disk that Windows does not detect. Microsoft documents this option for Windows 11 in Change a drive letter.

Protect files before attempting disk changes

9. Do not initialize, create a volume, or format a disk containing wanted files

If Windows shows Not Initialized, RAW, or Unallocated, or asks you to format the drive, stop if you need its existing contents. Initialization and formatting are disk or volume setup operations, not safe diagnostic steps for recovering an existing file system. Microsoft notes that some USB disks cannot be initialized. It also explains that a quick format creates a new file table but does not fully overwrite or erase the volume; that does not make formatting a safe recovery step. See Microsoft’s Disk Management guidance.

When the files matter, avoid further changes that write to the disk and seek recovery advice before initializing, creating a volume, or formatting. If the data is not needed and you intend to prepare the disk for reuse, first confirm that the correct disk is selected and understand that setup can make existing data inaccessible.

10. Escalate if the drive remains undetected or the data is inaccessible

Check the drive manufacturer’s support and warranty options if Windows still cannot detect it. If its contents are valuable, consider a reputable professional data-recovery service before making destructive disk changes. Recovery outcomes depend on the drive and the nature of the problem; the cited Microsoft documentation does not provide a recovery success rate.

Safely remove the drive next time

Microsoft Support advises: “To avoid losing data, always safely remove hardware devices like USB flash drives or external hard drives before disconnecting them.” Use Windows’ safe-removal option before unplugging the drive. This reduces the risk of data loss, but it does not establish that force eject was the cause of a later recognition problem.
