You can set up a classic Chromecast without a remote: use Google Home on a phone or tablet. Chromecast with Google TV is different. Its initial on-screen setup includes the Chromecast Voice Remote, so if you are stuck at a screen that needs remote input, you may need a compatible replacement. First identify which model you have.
Identify your Chromecast
A classic Chromecast is a cast-only dongle controlled from a phone, tablet, or computer. Chromecast with Google TV has an on-screen interface and uses a Voice Remote for navigating its initial setup. The steps depend on which device you own.
Set up a classic Chromecast without a remote
A physical remote is not required for the classic Chromecast setup flow. Use Google Home on a phone or tablet:

- Connect its USB power cable and power it using the included AC adapter plugged into a wall outlet. Google recommends the provided adapter.
- Install or open Google Home on your phone or tablet.
- Follow the Chromecast setup instructions in Google Home.
- When setup is complete, cast from a Chromecast-enabled app or Chrome.
In this setup, the phone or tablet handles the app-based setup and casting control.

Set up Chromecast with Google TV when the remote is missing
Google’s setup instructions for Chromecast with Google TV HD and 4K include the Chromecast Voice Remote for powering and navigating the TV interface, including language selection. A phone or tablet with Google Home can complete the phone-based part: the app finds the device, and you scan the QR code shown on the TV or enter the setup code manually. Google also documents completing setup on the TV with the Voice Remote instead of a phone. See Google’s Chromecast with Google TV setup guide.
The Google Home app is part of setup, but Google’s instructions do not establish that it can replace the remote for every first-time on-screen step. If the TV is waiting for input or you cannot get past remote pairing or navigation, use a compatible replacement Chromecast Voice Remote. Check that it works with your specific HD or 4K model before buying.

If Google Home cannot find your Chromecast
Try these checks in order. Google’s Chromecast discovery troubleshooting guide includes these steps:
- Move the phone or tablet closer to the Wi-Fi router and check that the signal is strong.
- Make sure the Wi-Fi network name is broadcast. For a hidden network, enter its details manually in Google Home.
- If the Chromecast will use a 5 GHz network, confirm the phone or tablet supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Check the phone’s settings and permissions. Google notes that Bluetooth on iOS and location access on applicable Android versions may matter for discovery.
- Toggle Wi-Fi off and on, then force-close and reopen Google Home.
- Try setup from another phone or tablet, or restart the router and Chromecast.
- If discovery still fails, follow the factory-reset instructions for your exact Chromecast generation. Reset controls and LED behavior vary by model.
When Ethernet can help—and when it cannot
Google documents Ethernet adapters for Chromecast Ultra and Chromecast with Google TV. With a compatible adapter connected to the Chromecast and a working router, setup can use a wired network instead of Wi-Fi; an Android or iOS mobile device is still needed. Check Google’s Ethernet adapter information and supported connectivity details for the specific model.

Ethernet can address unreliable Wi-Fi or network access, but it does not provide remote control or let you navigate a Google TV setup screen.
