To free up phone storage safely, check what is taking up space, remove downloads and media you recognize, and use your phone’s app-management options carefully. Treat photos as the last step: confirm they are backed up before removing local copies.
Check what is using your phone’s storage
Look at the phone’s storage breakdown before deleting anything. It helps distinguish large, replaceable downloads from photos, documents, or app data you may want to keep. Here, “storage” means space for files and apps—not the memory Android uses to run them.
- Android: Open Settings > Storage. Menu names and available controls can vary by manufacturer and Android version. See Google Android Help’s storage guidance.
- iPhone: Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Review the category breakdown, app list, and any recommendations. Apple describes the screen in its guides to managing iPhone storage and checking storage on iPhone and iPad.
Use the list to find likely space hogs, then decide item by item. Storage figures may not show every temporary or cached file as a separately removable item; Apple notes that app details may not include cached or temporary data.
Remove downloads and other clutter you recognize
Start with items you can identify and replace if needed. Look in the app or folder that owns the content, since deleting a download there may be clearer than removing files at random.

- Large message attachments that you no longer need.
- Offline content stored inside streaming or reading apps.
Apple lists downloaded videos, Files documents, Messages attachments, and unused apps among potential space users; Google Android Help also covers removing downloaded files, media, and unused apps. If you want to keep a file elsewhere, copying it to a computer is one option, but check compatibility for your phone and connection before choosing a cable or accessory.
Manage apps without deleting data by accident
Android: clear cache, not storage, unless you intend to reset the app
Android distinguishes temporary cache from an app’s stored data. Clearing cache removes temporary files. Clearing storage permanently deletes all data for that app, which may include information or settings you expect it to retain. Google’s guidance explains the difference in its Android storage instructions. Settings and labels can differ by phone, so read the confirmation before proceeding.

Free up photo space only after confirming backup
Do not use a photo-cleanup or “free up space” option until you have checked that the photos and videos you want to keep are backed up. In Google Photos, confirm backup status before using Free up space. The feature removes on-device copies that have been backed up; those items remain available in Google Photos or at photos.google.com, but may no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery, be available offline, or be accessible when you are signed out. Follow the platform-specific instructions for Android or iPhone and iPad.
On iPhone, Google’s instructions also say to remove the same items from Apple Photos’ Recently Deleted folder to recover the local space. Check that you can see the backed-up items in Google Photos before doing this. If you rely on the built-in gallery, offline access, or a signed-out phone, consider whether removing local copies suits the way you use your photos.

Return to Settings > Storage on Android or Settings > General > iPhone Storage on iPhone and review the updated available space. The amount freed depends on what was taking up space and what you chose to remove; there is no guaranteed number of gigabytes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDevice storage and cloud storage are separate
Removing a local file can make room on the handset without increasing a cloud account’s quota. Google Photos’ account storage manager concerns Google Account storage, while the phone’s Storage screen reports device space. If your problem is a full cloud account rather than a full phone, local cleanup alone does not resolve the account limit.
