You can’t manually empty a single System Data bucket on an iPad. Apple documents no button for that; iPadOS manages cached and temporary files and removes them when it needs space. To free storage, check Settings > General > [your iPad] Storage, then review Apple’s recommendations, large apps, and files you no longer need. Clear Safari data only if you want to remove Safari history and website data—not as a way to clear all system storage.
What “System Data” means on iPad
Apple’s current storage guide calls the operating-system category System. Its size varies by iPad model. The guide also describes Other, which can include system-managed or non-removable items such as Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries, logs and caches, Spotlight indexing, and system data such as Keychain and the CloudKit database. The labels and breakdown may differ with the iPad and its software version, so “System Data” does not necessarily refer to one consistent, separately removable item. Apple’s storage guide, published September 16, 2026, explains these categories.
Apple says iPadOS removes cached and temporary files when storage is needed; you do not have to clear them yourself. Cached music, video, and photo files may appear as Other in computer-based storage tools, and the iPad can remove cached files when it needs room. Apple does not document a control for purging all System or Other data on demand.
Check what is using storage
- Open Settings > General > [your iPad] Storage. The device name shown in the path may vary.
- Review the recommendations at the top of the screen, if any, and the app-by-app storage list.
- Open an app’s storage details to see the available options and decide whether its app data or related files are safe to remove.
The app usage shown there may not include all cached or temporary data, so it is not necessarily a complete inventory of everything an app has cached. Apple’s storage guide describes the categories and storage controls.

Choose a cleanup action that matches what you want to remove

Offload or delete an app
From the app’s entry in iPad Storage, choose Offload App to remove the app while keeping its documents and data. Choose Delete App only when you intend to remove the app and related data as well. App behavior can differ, and data that is not synced or backed up may not be recoverable after deletion.
Review files and downloads
Look through the storage categories and the Photos, Files, Books, and Messages apps for large items you no longer need. Apple identifies locally downloaded iCloud Drive files and Safari downloads among items that can use device storage. Delete or move only content you recognize; removing a local download may not be the same as deleting the original from a cloud service.

Clear Safari data only when that is your goal
The iPad User Guide documents this route: open Safari, open the sidebar and History, tap More > Clear, choose a timeframe, then tap Clear History. This removes Safari history, recent searches, cookies, and website permissions for location or notifications. It does not remove history stored independently by websites or records in other apps. Apple also documents Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data in its Safari troubleshooting guidance. Menu paths can vary by iPadOS version, so use the route available on your device. The iPad User Guide has the Safari steps.
Should you restart or update the iPad?
A restart is not a guaranteed System Data cleanup method. Apple recommends restarting as part of Safari troubleshooting, and says an iPadOS update might fix an issue; neither recommendation promises a particular drop in storage use. Use those steps when troubleshooting a relevant problem, not to expect a predictable storage reduction. See Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guidance.

Resetting settings is not the same as erasing the iPad
Reset All Settings returns selected settings to their defaults but does not delete data or media. It is not a cache-clearing control. Erase All Content and Settings removes content from the iPad, so it is not routine storage maintenance. Apple describes these options in its iPad reset guide.
If you are considering a settings reset, back up first if you need to preserve your settings. Before erasing or restoring the iPad, make a backup and confirm you understand what will be removed. Treat a full erase as a last-resort troubleshooting step, not a way to routinely clear system-managed files.
