Usually, no. Google’s current guidance for a forgotten Android screen lock is to erase the phone and set a new lock. A limited exception applies to eligible Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI 6.1 or later when the lock was changed within the past 72 hours: the previous PIN, password, or pattern may still work for recovery.
When can you unlock an Android phone without erasing it?
Eligible Samsung Galaxy phones with a recently changed lock
Samsung’s previous-screen-lock recovery feature may let an owner unlock a supported Galaxy phone without a reset if the screen lock was changed within the past 72 hours. It applies to supported models running One UI 6.1 or later; availability and menu names vary by model and software version. See Samsung’s instructions for using the previous screen lock method.
- On the lock screen, make at least five unsuccessful unlock attempts to reveal the relevant “Forgot PIN,” “Forgot password,” or “Forgot pattern” option.
- Choose that option and enter the previous PIN, password, or pattern when prompted.
- Stop if you enter the previous method incorrectly three times; Samsung says no further attempts are allowed through this recovery flow.
The feature is a narrow recovery window, not a way to bypass a lock on any Android phone. Samsung’s cited instructions are for the UK; confirm eligibility and exact screens in Samsung support for your model and region.

Android 4.4 or earlier with a pattern lock
Google documents a “Forgot pattern” account-recovery option for devices running Android 4.4 or lower. It requires the Google Account previously added to the phone. This is legacy guidance and should not be assumed to work on current Android versions. Google’s Android device unlock guidance explains the older procedure.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

What should you do if the exception does not apply?
For most forgotten modern Android locks, Google’s instruction is direct: “If you can’t unlock your phone, you’ll need to erase it.” The available official routes are remote erasure through Find Hub, if the phone meets Google’s requirements, or erasing it with its power and volume buttons using the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Remote erasure: Google says the phone must have power and an internet connection, be signed in to the relevant Google Account, have Find Hub enabled, and be visible on Google Play.
- Button-based erasure: Use the reset instructions for the exact phone model from its manufacturer. Button combinations and recovery screens differ.
Google’s reviewed guidance describes remote erasure, not remotely setting a replacement screen PIN. Samsung’s current support material likewise points to its limited previous-lock recovery feature or reset options. Do not assume device-finding services can change a forgotten screen lock remotely.

What happens to your data if you reset?
Erasing the phone removes data stored locally, including apps, photos, and music, according to Google. Data that was backed up to a Google Account may be restorable during setup, but Google says you need the PIN or pattern that was in use when that backup was made. Samsung’s US guidance directs users to sign in to the same Samsung account to restore backed-up data.
Before resetting, make sure you can access the account needed to set up the phone and restore any available backup. If important files may exist only on the locked device, pause and contact the manufacturer’s official support for instructions specific to your model before erasing it. See Samsung US guidance for an unresponsive or locked Galaxy screen.

Why third-party “unlock without data loss” promises need caution
The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal method to remove a modern Android screen lock while preserving local data. It supports only the specific Samsung previous-lock recovery case and the legacy Android 4.4-or-earlier pattern option described above; otherwise, Google directs owners to erase the phone. Treat claims of a general no-reset bypass as unverified, and check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact device and region.
Samsung’s Korea support page says its service center or consultant cannot remove a forgotten screen lock and that removal requires a full reset. That statement is specific to Samsung’s Korean support context, rather than a universal service policy: Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s screen-lock guidance.
