NASA Ames estimates that 10 to 50 meteorite-dropping events happen worldwide each day. That does not mean people see or recover 10 to 50 meteorites daily: NASA estimates only 2 to 12 of those events have the potential to be discovered by people, and says only a handful of falls are witnessed each year. These are approximate global rates, not a schedule for any particular place.

What counts as a meteorite strike?

The terms describe different stages of an object’s journey. A meteoroid is a small particle from a comet or asteroid orbiting the Sun. The streak of light it produces as it enters Earth’s atmosphere is a meteor. If some of the material survives the passage and reaches the ground, that material is a meteorite. NASA Science explains the distinction.

So the daily estimate of meteorite-dropping events is not a count of every object entering the atmosphere, every fireball, every person who sees one, or every specimen found. Those are different stages, and most incoming material does not reach the surface.

How many falls are noticed or discovered?

NASA Ames estimates that 2 to 12 meteorite-dropping events each day have the potential for discovery by people. It says about two-thirds of falls occur over the ocean, another quarter or so over very uninhabited land, and half of the potentially discoverable events occur on Earth’s night side. NASA Ames describes witnessed falls as only “a handful” each year; it does not give a precise current annual count of witnessed or recovered meteorites. NASA Ames’s frequency estimate is a global average, not a prediction for a particular town or region.

Even when a fragment reaches land, witnessing or finding it is not guaranteed. A meteorite-producing event may occur far from people, in darkness, or in a place where a small rock is difficult to distinguish from ordinary ground material.

Why do daily mass estimates differ from fall counts?

Mass and event count measure different things. NASA Science estimates that 48.5 tons (44 tonnes, or 44,000 kilograms) of meteoritic material falls on Earth each day and says almost all of it vaporizes in the atmosphere. A separate NASA page gives an estimate of 33 metric tons (73,000 pounds) of meteoroids per day, most of which harmlessly ablates high in the atmosphere. The pages do not explain the difference, so these should be treated as separate, attributed estimates rather than combined into one figure. NASA Science’s estimate; NASA’s meteoroid and meteorite overview.

NASA Ames says particles ranging from dust to a few kilograms are usually consumed completely. Some fragments survive, slow down, and fall at terminal velocity; pieces from a breaking object can scatter over an area several miles long. A large amount of incoming material can therefore coexist with many atmospheric burnups and a much smaller number of discoverable ground falls. NASA Ames describes the process.

How does the rate change with size and damage?

The daily meteorite-fall estimate should not be confused with estimates for large, damaging asteroid impacts. Larger objects are much less frequent, and NASA’s recurrence figures refer to different size and consequence categories.

Object or outcome Approximate frequency What the estimate describes
Automobile-sized object entering the atmosphere About once a year NASA says it produces a fireball and burns up before reaching the surface. NASA, Asteroid Fast Facts.
Football-field-sized object causing significant damage About every 2,000 years or so NASA’s Asteroid Fast Facts estimate; another NASA page gives about every 5,000 years for a similar description, and the sources do not reconcile the difference. Neither figure is an exact prediction. NASA, Asteroid Fast Facts; NASA, Asteroids.
Object large enough to threaten civilization Once every few million years Approximate recurrence estimate from NASA’s Asteroid Fast Facts page. NASA, Asteroid Fast Facts.

These intervals are broad estimates for impactor size or effects, not a countdown to the next event. A small meteorite fall and a destructive asteroid impact are not interchangeable events just because both may be casually called a “strike.”

How likely is a meteorite to hurt someone?

A fall somewhere on Earth is far more common than a serious human injury. NASA’s 2017 technical report estimates a fatality recurrence interval of several millennia and describes meteorite kinetic hazards as very small. It also estimates that small fragments or sand hit people about once a decade. NASA’s 2017 technical report.

A 2019 NASA technical presentation gives a range of 140 to 8,500 years for a threshold associated with a 50% probability of human fatality, with “thousands of years” as its best estimate. This is a model, not a forecast: the extreme upper-flux case assumes everyone is outdoors all the time, while the lower case assumes 5% outdoor exposure and lower flux.
