If someone can’t hear you when you turn on speakerphone, first check that the call isn’t muted and that Bluetooth hasn’t routed your microphone to another device. Then test the phone’s microphones in a recording app and, if you’re calling through an app, check its microphone permission and input selection. These checks help narrow down the cause; they do not by themselves diagnose a hardware fault.
Check mute and audio routing first
- Confirm the call is not muted. Look at the in-call controls and make sure mute is off. If you’re using a calling app, check its mute control too.
- Temporarily turn Bluetooth off. A connected headset, car system, or other accessory may be handling the call microphone. Turn Bluetooth off for a test call and check whether the other person can hear you. Google’s Pixel troubleshooting guidance includes checking Bluetooth and connected accessories.
- Check the selected call input. If an accessory is connected, confirm the phone or calling app is using the intended microphone. For an app call, its audio controls may offer a choice of microphone or device.
If the problem stops when Bluetooth is off, the route through the connected device is a likely factor. That does not prove the phone’s built-in microphone is faulty or rule out an accessory-specific problem.
Check for a case, film, or debris blocking a microphone opening
Remove the case and, if practical, any screen film or protector that could cover an opening. Inspect the phone’s microphone openings for debris. Clear them carefully without inserting pins, toothpicks, or other objects; pushing something into an opening can damage the phone.
Make another speakerphone call with the phone uncovered. If the other person can hear you now, the case or film may have been obstructing a microphone. Google’s Pixel guidance also recommends checking for case or screen-protector interference.

Compare calls with built-in recording tests
A normal call working does not establish that every microphone path works. Compare call behavior with recordings instead of repeatedly switching speakerphone on and off.
On an iPhone
- Open Voice Memos and speak toward the bottom of the phone. Play back the recording and listen for clear speech.
- Record a video while speaking toward the top of the iPhone. Switch cameras, record again, and play back both videos.
Apple recommends these tests in its iPhone microphone troubleshooting guide. If one recording is unclear while another is clear, that points to a difference between microphone paths or contexts; it does not identify a failed component.

On other phones
Use a built-in recording app, if available, and check whether your voice is clear on playback. You can compare a recording made while speaking toward different parts of the phone, but the iPhone-specific directions above should not be assumed to apply to every model. Use your manufacturer’s instructions for model-specific microphone tests.

Meet also says to make sure you are not in Companion mode, where its microphone and speaker are unavailable. See Google Meet’s Android audio troubleshooting.
- For Signal calls, check microphone permission, internet access, and whether the app is up to date. Signal also recommends switching speakerphone off and back on, then returning to the original speaker choice. See Signal’s calling troubleshooting guide.
If only one app is affected, the issue may be in its permission, input selection, or call setup rather than the phone’s microphone hardware. That pattern is a clue, not a diagnosis.
Restart and update before repeating the tests
Close the calling app and reopen it. Restart the phone, then check whether the app and operating system have available updates. Google includes closing apps, restarting, and checking for updates among its Pixel troubleshooting steps. Afterward, repeat a speakerphone call and a recording test so you can compare results.

AIRHUG 01 speakerphone makes online meetings easier for you while working from home
Use a compatible external microphone as an isolation check
If you have a known-working headset or external microphone, try a call with it. Check that it is compatible with your phone and supports microphone input during calls; a connector that fits is not, by itself, proof that the phone will use its microphone. Confirm that the phone or app selects the accessory as the input.
If the other person can hear you through the accessory but not through the built-in microphone in speaker mode, that narrows the troubleshooting path but does not identify which component has failed. An external microphone can be a temporary workaround, not a repair of the phone’s built-in microphone.

When to contact the phone maker or a service provider
If the built-in microphone remains silent or unclear in calls and recordings after you have checked mute, routing, permissions, and possible obstructions, contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Apple notes that service may be needed when its microphone troubleshooting does not resolve unclear audio; see Apple’s iPhone guidance. The appropriate service option and any cost depend on your phone model, location, and warranty status.
