Windows keeps its clock synchronized over a network through the built-in Windows Time service, W32Time, which uses Network Time Protocol (NTP). To see where a PC gets its time, run w32tm /query /source in Command Prompt. What you should configure next depends on whether the computer is standalone or managed by an Active Directory domain.
How Windows Time synchronization works
W32Time runs as a Windows service. It requests time information from a source and adjusts the local system clock based on the response. Accurate time supports reliable timestamps and network validation; in Active Directory environments, it also helps Kerberos authentication and directory operations.
The service uses NTP over UDP port 123. NTP servers typically listen on that port, and Microsoft notes that the built-in Windows client uses UDP 123 as its source port. A firewall or network policy that blocks the required traffic can prevent synchronization. Microsoft documents W32Time for Windows 10 and 11 and Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025, among other environments. Microsoft’s Windows Time service overview explains the service and its role.

Standalone computers
A standalone PC can use one or more manually specified NTP peers. Choose servers approved for your organization and network rather than copying example hostnames from a guide.

Active Directory domain members
Most domain-joined computers follow the Active Directory time hierarchy (NT5DS), rather than choosing an Internet peer independently. The forest-root PDC emulator is typically configured to use an external source. Changing a managed domain member to use a manual peer can conflict with the organization’s time hierarchy or policy, so confirm the intended configuration with the domain administrator first.
Inspect the current source and configuration
Run these commands in Command Prompt to check the active source, service status, peers, and configuration. Local configuration changes generally require an elevated Command Prompt; remote configuration has additional administrative requirements.

- Up to 6000 visits per second
- Local area network synchronization timing accuracy: 0.5-2ms
- Support GPS, Beidou, GLONASS, QZSS NTP v2 (RFC 1119), NTP v3 (RFC 1305), NTP v4 (RFC5905)

w32tm /config /manualpeerlist:"ntp1.example.net ntp2.example.net" /syncfromflags:manual /update
Microsoft recommends configuring three or more servers when using multiple peers. If configuring only two, it recommends marking one as a fallback with flag 0x2. After applying a change, check the active configuration and source using the query commands above.

If the intended source is the domain hierarchy, Microsoft documents this configuration and restart sequence:

- 1. GPS Satellite Time Synchronization: This NTP server receives global time signals from GPS satellites, ensuring nanosecond-level time synchronization accuracy, providing high reliability for your network equipment.
- 2. High-Precision NTP Service: Provides SNTP/NTP time synchronization with Daylight Saving Time (DST) support for finance, communications, and government.
- 3. Low Latency and High Performance: Optimized design with ultra-low network latency, ensuring multi-device sync accuracy to the millisecond level, ideal for applications where time precision is critical.
- 4.Flexible Dual-Power Deployment: Supports either AC power (wide voltage input 110V-264V) or standard PoE (IEEE 802.3af/at).
- 5. Easy-to-Use Web Management Interface: Supports easy installation and remote management. The intuitive interface makes it easy to monitor device status, configure settings, and maintain the system — ideal for IT administrators and technical teams.
w32tm /config /syncfromflags:domhier /update
net stop w32time
net start w32time
Do not use this sequence on a managed device without confirming it matches the organization’s policy. Group Policy can define NTP client settings, and a domain member may not use the NtpServer registry value when the Configure Windows NTP Client policy applies. Check w32tm /query /configuration before changing settings. Microsoft warns that registry values are critical and invalid settings can cause serious Windows errors; prefer supported policy and w32tm tools over casual registry editing. See Microsoft’s guidance on configuring Windows Time.

- Check the selected source: run
w32tm /query /source. If the source is not the expected domain or manual peer, inspectw32tm /query /configurationfor policy or configuration differences. - Check status and peers: run
w32tm /query /statusandw32tm /query /peersto see whether Windows has a usable source and whether peers are responding. - Test a named peer: run
w32tm /stripchart /computer:<server> /samples:5 /dataonly, replacing<server>with the peer name. This compares local time against that peer and helps test reachability. - Check DNS and network traffic: confirm the peer name resolves, then determine whether UDP 123 requests leave the machine and whether replies return. Check local firewall rules, network firewalls, and the server’s NTP service.
- Ask Windows to rediscover and resynchronize: run
w32tm /resync /rediscover.
If Windows reports that no time data was available
The exact error is “The computer didn’t resync because no time data was available.” Microsoft identifies common causes including an invalid or unresolved DNS name, blocked UDP 123 traffic, or a target that is not advertising itself as an NTP server. A trace can help distinguish a request blocked locally from one that leaves the computer without receiving a response; the latter can point to a network firewall or server-side issue. Follow the DNS, traffic, and server checks above before changing poll intervals or unrelated registry settings. Microsoft’s resync troubleshooting guide covers this error.

If the server requires client-mode requests
Some non-Windows NTP servers accept client-mode requests only. For that compatibility case, Microsoft documents setting the peer with the ,0x8 flag, then restarting W32Time and requesting synchronization. This is a targeted setting for a server that requires client mode, not a default flag to add without checking the server and current configuration. See Microsoft’s client-mode configuration example.
Accuracy, security, and organizational requirements
Microsoft says that “Under reasonable operating conditions, you can maintain a 1-ms accuracy with respect to UTC or better” for Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10 Anniversary Update domain members. This is a conditional capability statement, not a measured result or guarantee for every PC, network, configuration, or workload. For an authoritative organizational time server, Microsoft recommends obtaining time from a hardware source. It also states that synchronization with an Internet time source has no authentication, so organizations should account for their accuracy, traceability, and security requirements when selecting a source. These points are covered in Microsoft’s Windows Time support-boundary guidance.
