To adjust the brightness of the picture your PS5 sends to a TV or monitor, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration. If you mean the light on the console itself, use Settings > System > Beep and Light > Brightness instead. These controls affect different things.
Adjust the PS5’s HDR picture calibration
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Screen and Video, then Video Output.
- Choose Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen directions to calibrate the HDR image. Sony describes this option as enabling fine brightness adjustments and optimized HDR rendering. Sony’s HDR instructions use these menu labels; wording may differ with your console language or region.
Choose how the PS5 outputs HDR
The HDR mode is separate from the calibration flow. Go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR and choose the behavior that suits your display and content.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Always On | Converts non-HDR games and apps to HDR output as well as displaying HDR content. |
| On When Supported | Uses HDR for supported content and leaves unsupported games and apps in SDR. |
Image quality and HDR availability depend on the connected entertainment setup. Sony’s HDR support page explains these modes and the setup dependency.
Check your TV or monitor’s brightness controls
If the picture still looks too dark or bright after HDR calibration, check the display’s own picture settings. The controls and menu names depend on the TV or monitor model. For example, Sony’s instructions for its 27-inch gaming monitor say brightness is available in the monitor’s quick menu, including while HDR is active; that menu should not be assumed to apply to other displays. Sony’s monitor instructions cover that specific model.

Dim or brighten the PS5’s indicator light
This setting changes the console’s power-indicator light, not the image on your TV or monitor.
- From the home screen, open Settings > System.
- Select Beep and Light > Brightness.
- Choose Dim, Medium, or Bright. See Sony’s beep and light instructions.
Accessibility settings that affect appearance
PS5 accessibility options include Invert Colors, Color Correction, Text Size, Bold Text, and High Contrast. These change colors or legibility rather than providing a general picture-brightness slider. Sony notes that turning on Invert Colors turns HDR off. See Sony’s accessibility settings guide.
