A head-to-chest angle that reads 0.000 in every frame is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It does not prove that tracking failed or that the two poses are identical. Find the stage where movement disappears: tracking status, raw pose data, skeleton mapping or retargeting, then the angle calculation and its output.
What a constant zero can—and cannot—tell you
The value describes the reported output. Without the capture system, software version, angle definition and underlying pose data, it cannot identify the cause. The head and chest might not be updating, the wrong joints might be read, a transform might collapse their relationship, or the calculation or data handoff might emit a default zero.
Debug those possibilities separately rather than changing tracking settings or replacing hardware based on the angle alone. Keep the raw inputs, status and derived value associated with the same frames so you can see where they diverge.
Trace the value through the pipeline
1. Check tracking status alongside the zero
If your system exposes tracking state or a quality flag, log it for each affected frame. A zero during unavailable, limited or initializing tracking has a different context from a zero while tracking is reported as healthy.

For ARKit specifically, tracking can begin unavailable while pose estimates initialize, and a limited state includes a reason for reduced tracking quality. Apple describes these ARKit session states in its documentation on managing session life cycle and tracking quality. They are ARKit-specific states, not universal labels for motion-tracking systems.
2. Inspect raw head and chest poses
Plot or log the head and chest positions and orientations before calculating the angle. Check that values change when the subject moves, that timestamps advance, and that the two records belong to the same frame. A constant or stale input points toward capture, update, or data-selection problems; changing inputs mean the investigation can move downstream.

Vicon recommends inspecting tracked-object counts, position and rotation stability, plots, and system-health metrics. Its guidance notes that brief tracking failures or noisy regions can be difficult to spot without examining those signals. Those checks apply to Vicon workflows; use the equivalent diagnostics exposed by your own system.

Confirm that the values labeled “head” and “chest” actually refer to the intended joints or bones—not a differently named joint, a parent node, or a default value. Check the skeleton hierarchy, joint names, expected axes, orientations, and placement against the requirements for the model you are using.

Apple warns that an incompatible custom motion-capture model can behave incorrectly or fail in an ARKit workflow. Do not assume another platform uses the same skeleton contract or conventions.
4. Compare tracked data with mapped or retargeted output
If your pipeline maps a tracked skeleton to a character or another rig, inspect the tracked skeleton and the retargeted result separately. If the tracked bone moves but its mapped character bone does not, focus on mapping, hierarchy, or retargeting rather than the original capture.

Meta recommends visualizing tracking skeletons and retargeted results independently. OptiTrack’s rigid-body skeleton guidance also highlights rigid-body names and head and chest or hip placement. These are platform-specific diagnostics, not proof that retargeting caused a particular zero reading.

5. Validate the angle calculation and output
Once you have confirmed that the inputs update and identify the intended joints, inspect the calculation’s actual inputs and coordinate spaces. Check transform order, units, axis conventions, and whether missing or invalid data is converted to zero. Then follow the calculated value through serialization, storage, or display to see whether it changes before or after that handoff.

Test the calculation with known inputs that should produce a changing result. The right formula depends on what “angle between the head and chest” means in your application—for example, which orientations or direction vectors it compares. There is no single formula established here for the unspecified setup, so verify the definition used by your implementation rather than treating a particular calculation as a universal fix.

- Status is unavailable or limited: investigate initialization, interruptions, or tracking quality using the platform’s own status reasons.
- Raw head or chest values are stale or unchanged: check capture updates, timestamps, selected data, and the tracker’s health indicators.
- Raw poses move, but the tracked skeleton shows the wrong joints or placement: check joint names, hierarchy, axes, and model compatibility.
- The tracked skeleton moves, but the retargeted result does not: inspect the mapping and retargeting configuration.
- Inputs and mapped poses move, but the angle remains zero: inspect the formula, coordinate spaces, invalid-value handling, and output handoff.
These branches narrow the investigation; none identifies the cause without evidence from the affected system. If the setup uses a tracked headset, Meta lists examples of conditions that can interrupt headset position tracking, including leaving the tracking frustum, occlusion, a difficult-to-track orientation, or velocity outside the expected range. Those examples are specific to comparable headset tracking and should not be treated as universal causes in optical body capture or other pose-estimation pipelines.
