You can check a Turnitin similarity report before an essay’s final submission only if the assignment lets students view reports and permits a draft or resubmission. Those controls belong to the instructor or institution, so a student may not see a report at all. Where a report is available, use it to review matched passages and sources—not as a verdict on plagiarism or a target percentage.
Check whether your assignment allows a draft report
Before uploading a draft, read the assignment instructions or ask your instructor two specific questions: are draft submissions allowed, and can students see the similarity report before the final deadline? Assignment settings can make reports visible as soon as they are generated, delay access until after the due date, or prevent student access. Resubmissions may also be enabled or disabled.
These settings determine what “before submitting” means in practice. If draft submissions are not permitted, or the report is hidden until after the deadline, you cannot use Turnitin to preview a result through that assignment. Do not assume you can submit and replace a paper without checking the rules first.
Open and inspect the report

Understand what the similarity percentage tells you
The similarity score is the percentage of your writing that Turnitin identifies as similar to material in its internet, database, or student-paper sources. It points to text and sources to examine; it does not decide whether you plagiarized. Turnitin’s student guidance puts it plainly: “Turnitin does not check to see if a piece of work is plagiarized or not.” Turnitin’s explanation of the similarity score.

- Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
Read each highlighted passage in context. A match can be a properly quoted and cited passage or bibliography material, as well as text that needs revision. Check that quotations are marked and cited correctly, that paraphrases genuinely restate the source in your own words, and that evidence follows the citation style your instructor requires. If a match concerns you, discuss it with your educator rather than trying to reach a particular percentage.

Filters can affect the score
Turnitin reports can be configured to exclude quotations, citations, or bibliography material. Educators usually control these filters when setting up an assignment, so a score may reflect what the assignment includes or excludes. Ask your instructor which filters are being used and how to interpret the report for that assignment. Turnitin’s student guidance on report filters.

A report may take time to appear
A report can be processing, or student access may be delayed by the assignment settings. Turnitin’s product guidance says a new report after an overwritten or resubmitted paper may take a full 24 hours to generate; this is guidance, not a guaranteed processing time for every integration. Turnitin’s guidance on refreshing a report.
If the report is still unavailable, check the assignment instructions and ask your instructor to confirm when students can access reports, whether resubmission is allowed, and whether the submission has finished processing.
