A wireless access point (AP, sometimes called a WAP) is a networking device that lets Wi-Fi-capable devices connect to a network. In a typical setup, it links wireless clients to the wired network. A wireless router includes this access-point function, but also routes traffic between networks.
What a wireless access point does
An access point provides the wireless connection point for devices such as phones, laptops, and printers. In the common infrastructure arrangement, clients connect to the AP over Wi-Fi, and the AP connects them to the rest of the network through a wired connection or another distribution system.
Cisco describes an AP as a device that lets wireless-capable devices connect to a wired network (Cisco: What is an Access Point?). NIST’s glossary describes its role as logically connecting wireless clients and providing access to a distribution system when connected (NIST CSRC: Access Point (AP) – Glossary).

An access point and a router perform different network functions. The AP provides wireless client access; the router moves traffic between networks. A wireless router combines these functions in one device, which is why home networking products commonly provide both Wi-Fi and routing from a single box. Cisco likewise describes a wireless router as combining router and AP functions (Cisco: What Is a Wireless Router?).

| Device or function | Primary role |
|---|---|
| Wireless access point | Connects Wi-Fi clients to a local network. |
| Router | Routes traffic between networks. |
| Wireless router | Combines wireless access point and routing functions in one device. |
An AP does not, by definition, provide an internet connection or perform routing. Internet access depends on how the network is connected and configured; an AP can provide wireless access to a local network without itself being the device that routes traffic to the internet.
How multiple access points work together
A network can use multiple APs to provide wireless access in different areas. In a wireless LAN, an AP acts as a base station for client devices. A distribution system can connect APs as part of an extended service set, allowing a network to span multiple access points (Cisco: What Is a Wireless LAN?).

What the term does not guarantee
The label “access point” describes a network role, not a guaranteed level of speed, range, security, or reliability. Those outcomes depend on the particular equipment and how the network is configured and deployed. If you are choosing an AP, check the specific device’s compatibility, power requirements, management features, and deployment needs.
