To paste copied cell content without bringing over its formatting, copy the source cells, select the destination, then choose Edit > Paste special > Values only. On a computer, the shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+V on PC or ChromeOS and Command+Shift+V on Mac. If you mean repeating a cell down a range, use Fill down instead.
Paste copied cells without their source formatting
- In the same Google Sheets spreadsheet, select and copy the cells you want to paste.
- Select the destination cell or range.
- Choose Edit > Paste special > Values only.
Google describes Values only as pasting only the text from the copied range, rather than carrying over the source formatting. Google’s Paste special instructions specify that Paste special works only within a single spreadsheet.
Use the keyboard shortcut
After copying the cells and selecting the destination, press Ctrl+Shift+V on PC or ChromeOS, or Command+Shift+V on Mac. Google notes that shortcuts may not work with every language or keyboard. If yours does not work, use the Edit menu or check the shortcut list in Sheets. See Google’s Google Sheets keyboard shortcut reference.

Repeat a cell down a range
To fill a selected range with the top cell, select that cell and the cells below it, then use Fill down. This repeats the top cell through the selection; it is a different operation from pasting copied contents with Values only.

These shortcuts are listed in Google’s shortcut reference. The documentation identifies Fill down as a separate command; it does not establish formatting behavior for every cell type, so use Values only when your goal is specifically to avoid pasting source formatting.

What to do when Paste special is unavailable
- Copying between separate spreadsheets: Google limits Paste special to one spreadsheet. Use the command for a copy within a single spreadsheet; the documented workflow does not apply across separate spreadsheets.
- A shortcut does not respond: Shortcuts can vary by language or keyboard. Choose the command from the Edit menu or consult the Sheets shortcut reference linked above.
- You need a different paste behavior: Paste special includes separate options, such as formulas only and data validation only. Values only is the documented choice for pasting only text from the copied range without its source formatting.
