Use SketchUp to move from a measured room plan to a furnished 3D model you can explore and present. Start with accurate dimensions, organize the model as you build, then add architectural details, furniture, finishes, and saved views. Treat the result as a design and communication tool—not, by itself, a construction-verified or permit-ready plan.
What to prepare before you model
Begin with room measurements or an existing reference plan. Confirm the model’s units, keep a consistent scale, and choose a clear origin. Sketch the room outline and note fixed conditions that affect the design, such as walls, doors, windows, columns, and other constraints. Trimble Learn’s SketchUp for Commercial Interiors (Classic) teaches drafting over reference plans, including both fast and precise approaches.
Have key dimensions available for openings, built-ins, and furniture you already intend to use. A model is only as dependable as its inputs: check critical measurements and project requirements with the appropriate professional. The workflow below supports visualization and design communication; it does not establish that a model is suitable for permitting or construction on its own.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

1. Draw the floor plan
Trace or draft the room outline, then add the fixed features that shape circulation and furniture placement. Work at a consistent scale and check the dimensions as you go. If you are drafting over a reference plan, keep that reference available while you establish the geometry.

2. Organize the model before it gets crowded
Make separate groups or components for distinct objects rather than leaving unrelated geometry connected. Use tags to control visibility, and use Outliner to locate and manage model elements. Trimble Learn’s interiors course includes grouping, tags, and Outliner as organization techniques. Separating existing conditions, furnishings, built-ins, and alternate proposals makes it easier to show or hide parts of the design.
3. Turn the plan into a room
Extrude the floor-plan geometry to create walls, then make door and window openings. Add fixed architectural details such as cabinetry, shelves, windows, crown molding, and baseboards. The SketchUp for Interior Designers courses describe this progression from floor plan to 3D room, including wall extrusion and openings.

Model custom elements when a generic object will not represent the design clearly. Examples include a reception counter, workstation, or built-in. Keep dimensions and materials consistent with the rest of the proposal; Trimble Learn’s course specifically covers modeling custom furnishings for commercial interiors.

Search for finishes and apply them
In the material library, search with keywords, phrases, or images; filters can narrow results by category and texture-map type. See SketchUp’s guidance on searching for materials. To use a material in your model, download it and apply it to faces with the Paint Bucket tool, or save it as a standalone SKM file. The material-download instructions explain both options.
Check how a finish looks at the scale and orientation of the actual surface. A texture that appears plausible in a library preview may need adjustment once applied to a wall, floor, or furnishing.

Check which graphics engine your version uses
SketchUp for Web’s Materials panel can manage and create materials. Its WebGPU graphics engine supports physically based rendering (PBR) maps for metalness, roughness, and normal detail. SketchUp’s Web materials documentation says photorealistic materials cannot be used with the Classic graphics engine. These details apply to SketchUp for Web as documented; they should not be assumed to describe every SketchUp platform or plan.
Save views for design reviews
A scene stores selected view properties so you can return to a particular camera view and presentation setup. Before creating one, set the camera, visible geometry and tags, style, shadows, environment, and any section cut you want to show. Scenes appear as tabs and can be used to switch viewpoints or sequence an animation; see SketchUp’s scene instructions.

For a client review, consider saving a plan view, an overall room view, and focused views of important decisions. Those are useful presentation choices, not a required template. Create a separate scene when an alternate proposal or visibility state needs to be easy to revisit.
Prepare the model for presentation
Set up export views with the intended background, style, and scenes. The Trimble Learn interiors course includes presentation export setup. For more structured pages, SketchUp’s Help Center identifies LayOut as a documentation and presentation resource. The specialist course description also covers sending a model to LayOut, arranging page views and supporting images, and adding dimensions and callouts.
Plan access can change, so check the current SketchUp plan details to confirm whether LayOut is included before purchasing. A model or presentation is not a substitute for professional review of dimensions, codes, or construction requirements.

Set up comfortable navigation
A standard three-button mouse with a center scroll wheel is a useful option for model navigation, but it is not a requirement and no particular make or model is necessary. SketchUp’s getting-started guide discusses three-button mouse best practices; the specialist interior-design course also recommends one.
