To change a computer’s drive mode, enter BIOS/UEFI setup, find the SATA or storage configuration, select the supported mode, then save and exit. The exact key and menu labels depend on the computer or motherboard. If Windows is already installed, changing AHCI/IDE mode can stop it from booting; check compatibility and the installed storage drivers before you change anything.

What AHCI and IDE mean

AHCI and IDE are controller modes for SATA drives, not settings that replace or alter the physical hard disk. In the ASUS P8H61-I LX R2.0 manual, IDE mode presents Serial ATA disks as Parallel ATA physical storage devices, while AHCI enables advanced SATA features, including command ordering for random workloads. Those descriptions apply to that board; they do not establish a universal speed advantage for AHCI. ASUS P8H61-I LX R2.0 manual

Choose only a mode supported by the system and compatible with its operating system and storage drivers. IDE, AHCI, RAID, and Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) are not interchangeable labels. Intel says its RST driver is not compatible with AHCI mode; if your system uses RST or RAID, consult the computer or motherboard documentation before changing controller settings. Before changing the setting

  • Find the exact computer or motherboard model and consult its manual. Startup keys, menu names, and available modes vary by model.
  • For an existing Windows installation, determine which mode Windows currently uses and whether the required driver for the new mode is installed. A mismatch can prevent Windows from starting.
  • Do not assume an older operating system can use the same options as a newer one. Historical guidance for particular boards is model-specific: ASUS’s H61 manual advises IDE for Windows XP, while ASRock says Windows XP installation under AHCI requires loading the SATA driver first. These notes are not universal rules for all computers. ASRock AHCI FAQs

Change the BIOS or UEFI drive mode

  1. Identify your system. Use the computer or motherboard model to locate its manual and confirm which SATA modes it supports.
  2. Open BIOS/UEFI setup. Restart or power on the computer and press the setup key specified in the manual. For its Desktop Boards, Intel documents F2 and F10 as setup keys; other systems may use different keys. Intel Desktop Board setup guidance
  3. Find the storage setting. Look for a menu such as SATA Configuration, Drive Configuration, SATA Drives, or IDE Configuration. The location varies: Intel documents Advanced > Drive Configuration on some boards and SATA Drives on others; the ASUS manual’s example is Advanced Mode > Advanced tab > SATA Configuration > OnChip SATA Type. Follow your model’s manual rather than assuming one path applies to every system.
  4. Select the appropriate mode. Choose AHCI or IDE only if it is supported and compatible with the installed operating system and storage-driver setup. If the current installation depends on another controller mode, do not switch without platform-specific instructions.
  5. Save and exit. Use the BIOS/UEFI save-and-exit command. Intel documents F10 for its Desktop Boards; check your system’s manual for the correct command.
  6. Check startup. If the operating system does not start, return to BIOS/UEFI setup and restore the previous mode. Use recovery instructions specific to your Windows version and controller configuration.

If Windows will not boot after changing to AHCI

Microsoft documents a reboot-loop case in Windows 8 after changing the BIOS setting from ATA to AHCI. It attributes that case to Windows 8 Plug and Play behavior: “This is due to changes in Windows 8 PnP in which Boot Start Drivers are not installed by default.” Microsoft’s recovery procedure below applies to that documented Windows 8 scenario; it is not a general repair for every Windows version, controller mode, or computer. SABRENT USB 3.0 to 2.5in SATA Adapter Cable for SSD & HDD, UASP (EC-SSHD)
  • 2.5" SATA Drives Only — SSD & HDD: Compatible with 2.5" SATA I/II/III SSDs and laptop HDDs. NOT compatible with: M.2 NVMe drives, M.2 SATA drives, 3.5" desktop HDDs, or slim SATA optical drives. Verify your drive has a standard 2.5" SATA connector before purchasing.
  • USB Bus-Powered — No Adapter Needed for Most Drives: Powers most 2.5" SATA SSDs and laptop HDDs directly from USB. Note: Some older or high-capacity 2.5" mechanical HDDs may draw more current than a single USB port provides — if a drive fails to spin up, try a powered USB hub or a different USB 3.0 port.
  • USB 3.0 (USB-A) — 5Gbps with UASP: Host connection is USB Type-A (USB-A). Computers with only USB-C ports require a separate USB-C to USB-A adapter (not included). UASP support for faster transfers on compatible systems.
  • Plug & Play: No drivers required; hot-swappable design for quick access to drives on Windows, macOS, and Linux
  • Usage Note: Not intended for all configurations such as system boot drives or certain embedded systems; compatibility may vary by device

You need access to the local administrator account and its password. If you cannot sign in after restoring ATA mode, do not proceed with these commands.

  1. In BIOS/UEFI, restore the previous ATA setting, then start Windows normally.
  2. Confirm that Windows starts successfully and that you know the local administrator account and password.
  3. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal.
  4. Restart the computer, change the BIOS setting to AHCI, and start Windows in Safe Mode.
  5. In an elevated Command Prompt, run bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot.
  6. Restart normally.

Which mode should you choose?

There is no universally correct choice based on performance alone. Check what the board supports, what mode the installed operating system was configured to use, whether the necessary driver is present, and whether you need controller features exposed by AHCI. The cited documentation does not establish a universal speed gain or a single best mode for every computer. If the system is configured for RST or RAID, check its documentation and drivers rather than treating AHCI or IDE as equivalent alternatives.
