Nearby Sharing usually cannot find another Windows 11 PC because one device is not discoverable to the selected audience, a required wireless radio is off, or a Bluetooth adapter does not support the required Bluetooth Low Energy role. Check both PCs’ settings and wireless connection before considering new hardware.
What Nearby Sharing needs to discover another PC
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says both PCs must support Nearby Sharing and have Bluetooth 4.0 or later with Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) support. Nearby Sharing also needs an audience setting that includes the other PC, and Bluetooth and Wi-Fi should be on. Microsoft’s Nearby Sharing troubleshooting guide additionally directs users to check the network profile.
Discovery is different from ordinary Bluetooth pairing or Windows Network Discovery. Successfully pairing headphones or another Bluetooth accessory does not establish that the PC’s radio has the LE capability Nearby Sharing requires.
Check visibility on both PCs
- On each PC, open Settings > System > Nearby sharing.
- Confirm Nearby Sharing is enabled and the audience includes the other PC. For a diagnostic test, select Everyone nearby if that is appropriate for your environment.
- If the setting is My devices only, Microsoft says both PCs should be signed in to the same Microsoft account when troubleshooting a transfer stuck at “Waiting to receive.”
Everyone nearby can help distinguish a visibility restriction from a wireless or hardware problem. It also exposes the PC name and Bluetooth MAC address to nearby devices, which Microsoft says may be linkable to the user. After testing, return to your preferred audience setting. See Microsoft’s guide to sharing with nearby devices for the sharing options and privacy details.

Confirm the wireless route and network profile
Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi
Check both PCs: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi should be on, and airplane mode should be off. Toggle Bluetooth or Wi-Fi off and back on to refresh discoverability.
Know when sharing can use Wi-Fi
Microsoft says a sending PC running the latest Windows 11 can share over Wi-Fi when the receiving Windows 10 or 11 PC is connected to the same private Wi-Fi network. Otherwise, the transfer uses Bluetooth. This Wi-Fi route is conditional; it does not mean any two PCs on different networks can discover one another over Wi-Fi.

Check the receiving PC’s network setting
On the receiving PC, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi, select the connected network, and check that its profile is Private where applicable. For an Ethernet connection, open Settings > Network & internet > Ethernet and check the connected network’s profile. Microsoft includes the Private profile check in its Nearby Sharing troubleshooting guidance.

Verify Bluetooth LE Central Role support
The Bluetooth requirement is more specific than having a working Bluetooth toggle: Microsoft calls for Bluetooth 4.0 or later with LE support. Its troubleshooting steps identify the radio property Bluetooth radio supports Low Energy Central Role, which should have a value of True.
Rank #3
- Bluetooth 5.4 dongle: Applies the latest Bluetooth 5.4+EDR technology, compatible with Bluetooth 5.3/5.2/4.2/4.2 LE/4.0/2.1+EDR, and supports Dual mode (BR/EDR+ Bluetooth Low Energy) to achieve low energy consumption and high speed. Quick response and better anti-interference.
- Plug & Play: USB wireless Bluetooth is not limited by network and location, no need to install drivers, just plug the USB wireless adapter into your computer, you can use it directly. You can use the Bluetooth function at any time. Greatly improve your work efficiency and save your time.

- On each PC, right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Bluetooth, then open the Bluetooth radio’s Properties.
- Open the Details tab and locate Bluetooth radio supports Low Energy Central Role.
- Check that the property value is True.
If Bluetooth is missing, its toggle is unavailable, the property is absent or False, or Device Manager reports an adapter or driver error, use Microsoft’s Bluetooth connection troubleshooter and the Windows 11 Get Help app’s automated Bluetooth troubleshooter. Microsoft’s broader Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance covers possible hardware, driver, firmware, airplane-mode, and radio-state causes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Try these steps if the PC still does not appear
- Toggle Bluetooth or Wi-Fi off and on again on both PCs.
- If the sender remains at “Waiting to receive,” restart Bluetooth on both PCs, then restart both PCs.
- If either PC uses My devices only, confirm both are signed in to the same Microsoft account.
- Recheck the selected Nearby Sharing audience, the receiving PC’s network profile, and the LE Central Role property on both radios.
If discovery still fails, note the exact Windows version, Bluetooth radio model, LE Central Role property value, sharing audience, and network profile on each PC. These details help distinguish a visibility issue from a hardware or connection-path problem.

When a Bluetooth adapter might help
An adapter is relevant only if the PC lacks Bluetooth or its existing radio does not meet the required capability. Do not assume that an ordinary USB Bluetooth adapter will fix Nearby Sharing: verify that the exact adapter supports Bluetooth LE Central Role, has a Windows 11 driver, and is compatible with the PC and its existing wireless hardware. Microsoft’s Bluetooth documentation does not establish that any particular retail adapter meets the Nearby Sharing requirement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat not to change as a routine fix
The cited Microsoft troubleshooting instructions do not establish disabling security software, changing firewall policy, or applying a universal registry or command-line fix as standard solutions for discovery failures. Start with the supported checks for visibility, radios, network profile, and Bluetooth capability rather than weakening security settings.
Windows 10 note
Microsoft’s sharing guidance discusses Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, but this troubleshooting path is for Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; a PC still running Windows 10 should be considered separately from the Windows 11 steps above.
