Yes, streaming video through a hotspot uses data. Subtitles are not identified as a meaningful separate source of data use in the platform guidance reviewed, and no subtitle-specific amount is published there. The video stream’s quality is the more important factor; any subtitle effect is likely small by comparison, but that is a practical inference, not a measured captions-on versus captions-off result.
What affects hotspot data use most?
The video stream consumes data whether captions are on or off. Netflix’s published estimates show how much playback quality can change the total; these are Netflix figures, not universal rates for other services:

Netflix also describes mobile settings as approximately four hours per GB with Automatic and six hours per GB with Save Data. Maximum Data can use 1 GB per 20 minutes or more, depending on the device and network speed. Actual use varies, so treat these as service estimates rather than a guarantee for your hotspot session. Will Netflix’s phone data setting limit a tethered stream?
Not necessarily. Netflix says its mobile data-use setting applies to viewing on the mobile device over a cellular network; it does not affect viewing when tethered. If your phone is the hotspot and a TV, tablet, laptop, or streaming device is playing Netflix, do not assume the phone app’s mobile setting will limit that connected device. Netflix explained this scope in a 2016 article about data controls.

Instead, check the playback-quality or data-use controls in the app on the receiving device, if available, and check your carrier’s hotspot allowance. App labels and settings can differ by service and device.
How can you reduce data use?
- Lower playback quality: Choose a lower-quality setting in the streaming app or on the receiving device when one is available. Lower data use can mean lower picture quality; Netflix warns that restricting data may affect video quality.
- Check the service’s own controls: Disney+ says its lower data-use setting delivers slightly lower video and audio quality. Its Help Center gives approximately 2.5 GB per hour at up to 1080p Full HD for the mobile “Stream over Wi-Fi only” setting. That is a Disney+- and setting-specific example, not a general rate for hotspot streaming. See Disney+ data-use guidance.
- Confirm which connection a setting covers: A phone’s cellular-data option may not govern playback on a device connected through its hotspot. Look for controls on the device doing the playback.
Do Mbps recommendations tell you how much data a stream uses?
No. Mbps measures connection speed, while GB per hour describes data volume over time. Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for HD 720p, 5 Mbps for FHD 1080p, and 15 Mbps for UHD 4K. Those are recommended connection speeds for quality tiers, not estimates of total data consumed. See Netflix’s recommended internet speeds.
