To delete an app, touch and hold its icon, tap Remove App, choose Delete App, then confirm with Delete. If that option is missing, check Screen Time restrictions, device management, and any app that restricts access. Some built-in Apple apps cannot be deleted.
How do I delete apps on my iPhone?
- Find the app on your Home Screen or in the App Library. If you cannot find it, swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen and search for it with Spotlight; Apple says you can delete apps from Spotlight too. Apple Support explains the available deletion methods.
- Touch and hold the app icon. Tap Remove App, then tap Delete App.
- Confirm by tapping Delete.
In the App Library, touch and hold the app and choose Delete App, then confirm. The precise menu wording can vary with iOS version.

Does “Remove from Home Screen” delete the app?
No. Remove from Home Screen takes the icon off the Home Screen but leaves the app installed in the App Library. Choose Delete App to remove the app from the iPhone. Apple describes both options in its iPhone app removal guide.

Why can’t I delete an app on my iPhone?
If Delete App does not appear, work through these checks in order. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance for apps that cannot be deleted covers these common restrictions.

1. Check Screen Time deletion permissions
Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps. Set the control to Allow if deletion is restricted. A parent or guardian may control this setting on a child’s iPhone.
2. Check whether the iPhone is managed
Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and look for a management profile. If the iPhone belongs to or is managed by an employer or organisation, contact its IT administrator; the organisation may restrict removal of particular apps.

3. Check third-party restriction apps
Some apps that manage screen time or restrict app use can interfere with deletion. Review the settings of any such app installed on the iPhone. Apple lists Screen Zen, Cape, Opal, Freedom, and Refocus as examples; if the app’s settings do not resolve the issue, contact its developer.

Apple recommends updating iOS when an app cannot be deleted. After updating, repeat the deletion steps. If the option is still missing, check the restrictions above.

Can you delete built-in Apple apps?
Some built-in Apple apps can be removed, but not all. The available list depends in part on region; Apple says additional built-in apps may be deletable in the European Union. See Apple’s list and guidance for deleting built-in apps rather than assuming every Apple app can be removed.
Apple notes that deleting a built-in app can also remove related user data and configuration files, and may affect related system functions. Consider those effects before removing one.

What happens to subscriptions and data when you delete an app?
Cancel subscriptions separately
Deleting an app does not automatically cancel an in-app subscription. Cancel any subscription you no longer want separately before deleting the app. Apple Support’s deletion guidance spells out this distinction.

Deleting an app does not, by itself, delete photos or documents stored in iCloud. However, deleting a built-in app may remove related data or affect associated functions, so deletion should not be treated as a guarantee that every trace of app data is erased.

Download an app again if you need it
You can download a deleted app again from the App Store if it is still available. To restore a built-in Apple app, search the App Store using its exact name.
