To hide notification text while keeping alerts, open Settings > Notifications > Show Previews and choose When Unlocked or Never. To remove a particular app’s alerts from the Lock Screen, change that app’s alert locations; to stop its notifications entirely, turn off Allow Notifications. These are separate controls.
Hide notification previews while keeping alerts
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then Show Previews.
- Choose the option that fits your privacy preference.
| Option | What appears while iPhone is locked | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Always | Notification previews appear on the Lock Screen. | You can read content without unlocking, but someone nearby may also see it. |
| When Unlocked | Preview content stays hidden until iPhone is unlocked. | Alerts remain, but you must unlock to read their contents. |
| Never | Preview content does not appear on the Lock Screen. | Offers the most privacy for preview text, while leaving notification alerts enabled. |
Previews can include message text, lines from emails, or Calendar invitation details. What appears depends on the app, and not every app supports previews. Apple documents these choices in its notification settings guide and Lock Screen guide.
Hide or turn off one app’s Lock Screen alerts
If you want previews from other apps but not a specific app’s alerts on the Lock Screen, adjust that app’s alert placement:

- Go to Settings > Notifications.
- Tap the app under Notification Style.
- Under its alert options, deselect Lock Screen. Available options can vary by app.
This removes the app’s alerts from the Lock Screen location; it does not necessarily stop them from appearing elsewhere. To prevent the app from sending notifications altogether, turn off Allow Notifications on that app’s notification settings page.

Choose how notifications are arranged
The Lock Screen layout changes how notifications are grouped, not whether preview content is visible or whether an app is allowed to notify you.
- Count: Shows the number of notifications.
- Stack: Groups notifications by app.
- List: Displays notifications in a list.
Choose Count, Stack, or List under Settings > Notifications. Apple also says you can change the layout by pinching notifications on the Lock Screen.

Control access to notification history while locked
Hiding preview text is different from preventing access to Notification Center. If you want to control whether someone can open notification history from the Lock Screen, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Touch ID & Passcode, then review Allow Access When Locked > Notification Center. Apple’s guide to viewing and responding to notifications covers this access setting.
