To create a pattern in Illustrator, select the artwork you want to repeat, choose Object > Pattern > Make, adjust the tile and repeat settings in Pattern Editing mode, then choose Done. Illustrator saves the pattern as a swatch you can apply to an object’s fill or stroke.
Create a pattern from your artwork

Create the motif you want to repeat, or select existing artwork. Illustrator can also open pattern creation before you add artwork. See Adobe’s pattern creation instructions.

With the artwork selected, choose Object > Pattern > Make. Illustrator enters Pattern Editing mode, opens the Pattern Options panel, and previews repeated copies.

Give the pattern a name and choose a tile layout. The artwork inside the tile is the repeat unit: changing the tile’s size or spacing changes how the copies meet.

When the preview looks right, choose Done. Illustrator adds the pattern to the Swatches panel. Choose Cancel to leave without saving the editing operation; if available, Save a Copy keeps a separate copy rather than changing the current pattern.
Choose a repeat layout and tune the tile
The layout determines how neighboring tiles line up. Adobe documents these options and the related spacing and overlap controls in its pattern editing guide.

Use the preview to judge the repeat rather than relying on the motif in isolation. Controls such as Show Tile Edge, Show Swatch Bounds, Copies, and Dim Copies to help you inspect the tile boundary and its neighboring copies. A clean repeat depends on the artwork and tile dimensions; the settings do not guarantee that every motif will join seamlessly.

Apply the pattern to a fill or stroke

Select the object you want to decorate.

Open its fill or stroke swatches and choose the pattern swatch you created. Adobe’s pattern tutorial covers applying the pattern to either.

Edit a pattern or start from a built-in option
Refine a saved pattern
Double-click the pattern swatch to reenter Pattern Editing mode. Adjust the motif, tile, or repeat settings, then choose Done. Editing an existing pattern updates that swatch’s definition, so use Save a Copy when available if you need to preserve the original separately.
Use a library or generated pattern
Illustrator includes pattern libraries that can serve as starting points; creating a pattern manually does not require them. Adobe also documents an optional generative workflow called Text to Pattern. Generated patterns have a limitation: Adobe says their Tile Type and Brick Offset settings cannot be changed. Fix gaps, collisions, or unavailable settings

Unexpected gaps: inspect the tile boundary and adjust its width, height, or spacing. The tile defines the repeat unit, so an oversized tile can leave more empty space between motifs.

Motifs collide: increase dimensions or spacing, or change the overlap order if artwork from neighboring tiles crosses.

A layout control is unavailable: check whether you are editing a generated pattern; Tile Type and Brick Offset cannot be changed for generated patterns.

The preview does not look seamless: inspect the tile edges and their adjoining copies. Some artwork needs adjustment to align cleanly at the boundary.
Adobe last updated its creation instructions on August 31, 2026, and its pattern-editing guide on February 11, 2026. Illustrator’s interface labels can vary by version.
