Replacing a phone battery means removing the phone’s old or faulty battery and fitting a compatible replacement so the device can regain usable capacity or performance. The exact repair depends on the phone model: parts, adhesives, tools, service options and risks differ from one handset to another.
What phone battery replacement involves
A phone battery is a consumable component. As it ages, its capacity or ability to deliver power can decline. Replacement is the repair process of taking out that battery and installing one designed for the exact phone model. It is not a universal procedure: phone construction and repair materials vary, and instructions for one model should not be assumed to apply to another.
When might a phone battery need replacing?
More frequent charging, rapid battery drain after charging, or unexpected shutdowns can be signs of battery aging. They are reasons to check the battery’s condition, not proof that the battery is the cause; other phone or software problems can produce similar symptoms.
- Apple says increasingly frequent charging might mean it is time to service the battery: Apple battery service and recycling.
- Samsung lists rapid drain and unexpected shutdowns among possible signs of an aging battery and offers battery-condition diagnostics through Samsung Members: Samsung Galaxy battery support.
Battery-life figures from manufacturers are design guidance, not universal replacement deadlines. Apple says iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions, while iPhone 15 models are designed for 80% after 1,000 cycles under ideal conditions. Apple notes that actual performance depends on use and charging. Google’s capacity-retention and cycle guidance varies by Pixel generation and charging recommendations, so check the guidance for the specific device.

Who should replace the battery?
The right route depends on the exact model, the owner’s repair experience, warranty status and location. Manufacturers may offer or direct owners to professional service, while self-repair guidance varies by device. Opening a phone can damage it, cause injury or create a fire risk; it can also affect water and dust resistance.
- Professional service: Apple recommends Apple or an authorized service provider for built-in lithium-ion polymer battery service and says trained technicians should replace iPhone batteries. Google’s Pixel 4a manual directs users not to remove the battery and to contact Google or an authorized provider. Check the current instructions for the exact model.
- Self-repair: Google does not recommend Pixel 10 self-repair unless the person has technical expertise. Newer Pixel safety guidance discusses self-repair for technically experienced adults while warning of hazards. Follow only the guidance and repair instructions for the specific phone.
Battery replacements should use parts matched to the exact model. Apple warns that a non-genuine battery may be used, damaged, poorly made or incorrect for the phone, with potential fit, performance, software, charging and safety problems. Repair materials can be model-specific too: for example, the Pixel 7 repair guide requires replacement adhesive. Do not assume a generic battery or tool kit is suitable.

What if the battery is swollen or damaged?
Do not treat a generic do-it-yourself tutorial as sufficient instructions for a visibly swollen or damaged battery. Google directs Pixel owners with a swollen battery to repair options. Seek guidance from the phone’s manufacturer or an appropriately qualified repair provider.

What does replacement cost, and is it covered?
There is no single price or coverage rule for phone battery replacement. Service costs, eligibility, terms and available providers depend on the phone model, location and warranty status. Apple says its service prices and terms may vary; Samsung says replacement coverage depends on warranty conditions. Check the manufacturer’s service information for the exact device and region before arranging a repair.
