TechRadar’s Australia guide names five robot vacuums for different needs: the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni as its overall pick, Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller as runner-up, Xiaomi X20+ as the budget choice, Roborock Saros 20 for carpets and Dreame X50 Ultra for pet owners. These are the guide’s recommendations, not a universal ranking: floor type, hair, thresholds, furniture clearance and how much dock maintenance you’ll tolerate should shape your choice.

The guide was written by Sharmishta Sarkar, who says she has tested robot vacuums for a decade. TechRadar describes testing each reviewed model for at least two weeks across pickup, mopping, mapping, navigation and daily use. Its assessments below are attributed to that guide; prices and stock can change quickly.

How to choose between these five robot vacuums

Start with the cleaning job, not the largest suction figure on the box. TechRadar cautions that maximum pascal (Pa) ratings do not automatically predict real-world pickup. Its guide compares debris pickup on carpet and hard flooring, hair handling, edge cleaning, mapping, obstacle recognition, mop design, dock upkeep, height and threshold clearance.

  • Flooring: Carpet and pile, hard floors, or a mix can change which features matter most.
  • Hair and debris: Consider whether the home has pet hair, long hair, fine dust or larger crumbs.
  • Mopping: Roller mops and spinning pads are different approaches; check how the robot handles carpets while mopping.
  • Navigation: Mapping and obstacle recognition matter around cables, socks and other objects. TechRadar advises pet owners not to rely on any robot to avoid feces, even when pet-mess recognition is advertised.
  • Home layout: Check robot height against furniture clearance and threshold ability against transitions between rooms.
  • Dock and upkeep: Self-emptying and mop care reduce routine work but docks take space and still need attention. Water tanks require refilling and emptying; dust bags can develop odors if moisture gets into them.

TechRadar says its pickup tests use flour and cookie crumbs for fine debris and oats for larger debris, repeated on carpet and hard flooring, with remnants checked after one and two passes. Its mopping tests use dried ketchup and soy sauce and assess floor detection and mop lifting over carpet. Mapping checks cover map speed and accuracy, route logic and repeated coverage; obstacle checks include a cable, a floor-colored sock and fake pet waste. These are the guide’s reported methods, not results independently reproduced here.

Which models did TechRadar recommend?

Model Guide’s pick What the guide highlights Important trade-off or qualification
Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni Best overall Strong tested pickup on tea, oats, hair and fine dust; good edge cleaning and navigation; roller mop for many dried stains. Very dirty carpets and heavy dried spills can still challenge it. TechRadar said it had been discontinued but retailer stock remained; check current Australian stock and pricing.
Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller Runner-up Strong carpet-hair pickup and roller mopping; mop cover protects carpet; dock dries the dust bag. Requires clean-water refills and dirty-water emptying; the mop roller may remain slightly damp after drying.
Xiaomi X20+ Budget pick Lower-cost option with a dock featuring 4 L clean- and dirty-water tanks. The mop-pad self-cleaning cycle still requires brushing gunk off the pads. Check the current local listing for full model-specific details.
Roborock Saros 20 Carpet pick Slim, turret-free design; chassis raises to cross thresholds and thick carpets; carpet and obstacle recognition; mop pads can be left at the dock for vacuum-only runs. Described as very premium priced. TechRadar’s reviewer did not independently record battery runtime.
Dreame X50 Ultra Pet pick Dual spinning mop pads, self-emptying, 3.2 L dock dust bag and up to 6 cm threshold clearance. TechRadar flagged patchy object avoidance and faster battery drain. The guide said a successor had appeared and retailers were clearing stock; confirm current Australian availability.

Best overall: Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni

TechRadar’s overall pick is the Deebot X8 Pro Omni. The guide reports good pickup in its tests across tea, oats, hair and fine dust, plus reliable navigation and edge cleaning. Its roller mop handled many dried stains, although the guide says exceptionally dirty carpet and heavy dried spills remain difficult jobs.

The guide lists 18,000 Pa maximum suction, a 9.8 cm robot height, an extendable roller mop, a self-emptying dock with a 3 L dust bag and 2 cm threshold clearance. TechRadar’s article-era advice was to avoid paying full price and consider it below AU$1,400; that threshold is not a current price guarantee. The model was described as discontinued with retailer stock still available, so verify the exact Australian listing before buying.

Runner-up: Dreame Aqua10 Ultra Roller

TechRadar highlights the Aqua10 Ultra Roller for carpet-hair pickup and roller mopping. Its mop cover protects carpet, while the dock dries the dust bag. The guide also notes optional detergent and pet-odor neutralizer, and a long-handled maintenance brush.

Automation does not eliminate chores: the user still has to refill clean water and empty dirty water, and TechRadar observed that the roller could remain a little damp after the drying cycle. Consider this model if roller mopping and carpet-hair pickup appeal, but account for the ongoing tank and mop maintenance.

Budget pick: Xiaomi X20+

The X20+ is TechRadar’s lower-cost recommendation. Its dock has 4 L clean- and dirty-water tanks, a capacity worth considering alongside the space the dock occupies.

The guide’s key upkeep caveat is that the pad-cleaning cycle is not entirely hands-off: gunk still needs to be scrubbed from the mop pads with a brush. The source does not provide enough detail here for a full feature-by-feature comparison, so check the current Australian product listing for the exact variant and included features.

Carpet pick: Roborock Saros 20

TechRadar recommends the Saros 20 for carpets, citing a slim, turret-free shape and a chassis that raises to traverse thresholds and thick carpet. It also recognizes carpet and obstacles. For vacuum-only cleaning, the guide says the mop pads can be left at the dock.

The guide describes the model as very premium priced, and its reviewer did not independently record battery runtime. If runtime is decisive for your home, look for reliable information on the exact variant rather than treating an unrecorded figure as a measured result.

Pet pick: Dreame X50 Ultra

TechRadar’s pet-focused choice is the X50 Ultra, which it lists with 20,000 Pa maximum suction, an 8.9 cm robot height, dual spinning mop pads, self-emptying, a 3.2 L dust bag and up to 6 cm threshold clearance. The guide also flags patchy object avoidance and quicker battery drain—important considerations in homes with pets and their belongings.

On battery use, Sarkar reported about 90 minutes of vacuum-only operation in real use, compared with the manufacturer’s claimed maximum of up to 200 minutes under the lowest settings. Those are distinct, qualified figures from the guide, not a head-to-head battery test. The article said a successor was available and retailers were clearing X50 Ultra stock at AU$1,795–AU$1,999 when it was written; those dated prices should not be treated as current.

Can a robot vacuum replace a normal vacuum?

No—not as a complete replacement. TechRadar describes robot vacuums as suited to regular, light floor cleaning rather than deep cleaning. They do not clean stairs, furniture or other non-floor surfaces, so a manual vacuum remains useful for those jobs. A robot can reduce routine floor-cleaning effort, but the guide does not present it as a substitute for a proper deep clean.

Vac or mop-vac?

Choose based on the surfaces and cleaning you need. Vacuum performance matters for dry debris and carpets; a mop function is for hard-floor maintenance, and its usefulness depends on mop design, carpet handling and how much dock care you accept. TechRadar’s guide includes a roller-mop model and models with spinning pads, but the supplied comparisons do not establish that one design is universally better. Look for evidence on your floor types rather than relying on suction ratings or a mop feature label alone.

Are robot vacuums worth it?

They can be worthwhile if the main goal is more frequent, automated floor upkeep and your home’s layout suits the robot. The trade-off is that hands-off cleaning still involves maintaining tanks, pads, dust bags and the dock, while stairs, furniture and deep cleaning remain outside the robot’s job. A 2024 Roskilde University study is summarized by TechRadar as finding that robot vacuums are inferior in use to manual vacuuming yet transform the experience of vacuuming; the guide does not give a numerical result or further study details in that passage.

TechRadar’s guide, updated 23 September 2026, is the source for the recommendations and assessments in this article: The best robot vacuum in Australia.
