There is no documented universal Windows setting that makes laptops overheat while charging. Windows power mode can influence the balance between performance and efficiency, so choosing Best power efficiency is a sensible, low-risk check if your laptop gets hot under load while plugged in. But charging heat also depends on the adapter, workload, ventilation, and the laptop’s own firmware and cooling system.
Check Windows power mode first
On supported Windows 11 and Windows 10 laptops, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft lists Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance; availability can vary by device. Microsoft describes these modes as power preferences, not charging-temperature controls.
- Choose Best power efficiency while the laptop is plugged in.
- Use the laptop normally and see whether the heat changes. Compare similar tasks, since a demanding workload can generate more heat than light use.
- If the setting is unavailable or the laptop behaves differently than expected, check the laptop maker’s power-management guidance. Some options depend on the device.
A cooler result may indicate that the performance-versus-efficiency preference affected the laptop’s workload or power behavior. It does not establish that a hidden Windows setting caused the original heat.
Why charging heat does not point to one Windows switch
Charging and thermal management involve the laptop’s hardware, firmware, and drivers as well as Windows. Microsoft’s hardware guidance says a device may slow or stop charging in a thermal condition to help reduce heat. The laptop’s processor and cooling response are coordinated with platform-specific thermal zones, firmware, and drivers, so the exact behavior and controls vary by model.

Heat can also rise when the laptop is doing demanding work, has limited airflow, or cannot dissipate heat as quickly as it is being produced. A power mode is only one part of that picture; the information available for a particular laptop is needed to identify a specific cause.
If the battery drains or charges slowly while plugged in
Check the charging path before changing advanced Windows settings. Microsoft recommends using the charger and cable designed for the PC and directs users to the manufacturer for model-specific advice. Confirm that the adapter and cable are compatible with the laptop, provide the power it requires, and are connected to the correct charging port. Connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.

Microsoft notes that USB-C can support up to 5 V, 3 A, or 15 W, while USB Power Delivery can support higher power levels. Those figures describe connector and charging capabilities, not what a particular laptop needs; check the PC maker’s specifications for the required charger and port.

If the heat is persistent or extreme, the laptop shuts down, the battery appears swollen, there is an unusual odor, or the adapter or cable is visibly damaged, stop treating a power preference as the diagnosis and seek the manufacturer’s service guidance. The sources cited here do not establish a universal temperature threshold for deciding when a laptop is too hot.

Windows 10 users can follow the same general power-mode check where available, but Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. For current Windows guidance and ongoing support, use Windows 11 where the device supports it.
