Use the app controls in your phone’s Settings before trying any removal shortcut. If the app offers Uninstall, the phone permits ordinary removal; if it offers Disable, that is a more reversible way to stop it. If neither appears, don’t assume a generic removal command is safe. “Bloatware” is an informal label, not proof that an app is unnecessary: removing or disabling a system app can affect other apps or phone functions.
What counts as bloatware—and why the label isn’t enough
People often call unwanted pre-installed apps “bloatware,” but the label does not tell you whether an app is safe to remove. Manufacturers and operating-system versions differ, and an app that looks optional may support another feature. Android’s guidance warns that “Deleting or disabling system apps can affect other apps or functioning of system” (Android, 16 February 2026).
Before changing anything, note your phone’s brand, model, and software version. Open the app’s information page in Settings and use the actions shown there. Android recommends researching an app before deleting or disabling it; a third-party “safe to remove” list may not match your device.

Uninstall, disable, or hide: choose the least disruptive option
| Action | What it does | Limits | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uninstall in Settings | Removes the app when the phone permits it. | Availability varies. Removing an app can affect related functions. | An app you do not need when Settings offers Uninstall. |
| Disable in Settings | Stops the app from running in the ordinary way. Android says a disabled app does not run in the background, use system resources, or receive updates. | It can usually be enabled again, but Android warns system changes may affect other apps or functions. No general battery or storage gain is established. | An app that cannot be uninstalled, whose role you understand, and that you want to test stopping. |
| Hide or remove its icon | Reduces visible clutter without necessarily deleting the app. | The app may remain installed and accessible elsewhere. | You mainly want a cleaner Home Screen or app list. |
| ADB package command | Uses Android developer tooling to act on an app package. | Requires setup; effects depend on the exact package, device, Android build, and command. It is not a universal safe-removal method. | Experienced Android users with exact-device documentation and a recovery plan. |
How to check the app’s available actions
- Open Settings and find the app’s information page. The exact menu path and labels vary by phone; you can often find the app under Apps or search for its name in Settings.
- Check whether the page offers Uninstall, Disable, or neither. Use only an action presented by the phone.
- If you are unsure what the app does, leave it enabled and consult official guidance for your exact model rather than relying on a generic removal list.
When to uninstall or disable
Choose Uninstall for an app you do not need when the phone offers that action. If Settings offers Disable instead, disabling is a less final test: Android says it prevents the app from running in the background, using system resources, or receiving updates. That guidance does not promise a particular storage, speed, or battery improvement.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

When hiding is enough
If your goal is simply to declutter, hiding an app or removing its icon avoids changing its installed state. The available controls depend on the phone. Samsung, for example, supports hiding some pre-installed apps from its Home and Apps screens. On Apple devices, removing an app from the Home Screen leaves it in the App Library; it is not the same as deleting it.
When to leave the app alone
Do not change an app if its purpose is unclear, the phone blocks removal, or a feature you rely on may depend on it. Keep core communications, security, device-management, and feature dependencies in mind. Seek model-specific official guidance before proceeding.

Samsung Galaxy: some built-in apps cannot be deleted
Samsung’s UK Galaxy guidance, updated 26 May 2026, says some pre-installed apps can be deleted, while Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery, and My Files are essential for basic functions and cannot be deleted. Depending on the app, Samsung says hiding or disabling may be available instead. These examples apply to the Samsung Galaxy guidance cited, not every Android phone or model (Samsung UK).
iPhone and iPad: deleting built-in apps has wider effects
Apple allows deletion of some built-in apps on iOS 14 or later and iPadOS. Deleting one also removes its related user data and configuration files, and can affect other system functionality. Which apps are removable and what they support varies by app and region; consult Apple’s current built-in app guidance before deleting one.

For a cleaner Home Screen without deletion, move the app to the App Library instead. Apple documents additional built-in app removals in the European Union and Japan, subject to regional prerequisites and consequences. For example, deleting Messages in the EU requires setting up an alternative default messaging app, and deleting the App Store in the EU requires an alternative app marketplace. These options are not universal; check Apple’s regional guidance for current availability and requirements.
ADB: an advanced option, not a universal debloating fix
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a command-line developer tool, not a vetted consumer list of removable packages. Android’s documentation covers connecting a device and issuing commands, but does not certify a universal list of safe packages. Some ADB commands can remove a package for a user without physically deleting the system image; the result depends on the package, device, Android build, and command. Do not assume every change is easy to reverse.

For a USB-connected ADB session, Android requires USB debugging to be enabled in Developer options. A compatible data cable may be needed. Follow the official ADB documentation, research the exact package for your device, and have a recovery plan before changing anything. Avoid commands against unknown package names or core services; for most readers, Settings is the safer route.

Ads or suspicious pop-ups are a separate problem
Unexpected ads do not prove that a pre-installed system app is bloatware. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance focuses on checking app safety, diagnosing suspicious third-party apps, and avoiding apps from unknown sources. Use its security troubleshooting steps rather than disabling system apps at random.
