On iPhone 18 Pro models, open Camera, tap the Camera Controls button, then choose Histogram. The graph helps you check exposure across the frame while composing; it does not automatically change exposure or prescribe one correct brightness for every scene.
Who can use the histogram?
Apple identifies iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max as supporting its new Pro camera controls, including a histogram for checking exposure. Apple announced the feature on September 9, 2026, and its iOS 27 guide documents the controls. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement and Apple’s advanced camera tools guide provide the official details.
How to turn on the histogram
-
Open the Camera app.
-
Tap the Camera Controls button, then tap Histogram.

Apple describes the histogram as a way to check exposure across the frame while composing. It is a visual aid, not an automatic exposure correction. A graph concentrated near one end may draw attention to very dark or bright parts of the image, but that is not necessarily a problem: the intended exposure depends on the scene and the look you want.

How to read the graph
In the standard left-to-right interpretation, the left side represents shadows, the middle represents intermediate brightness, and the right side represents highlights. A large concentration toward the left indicates more dark tones; a concentration toward the right indicates more bright tones. The graph is a guide to the distribution of tones across the image, not a map showing where those tones occur in the frame.
Histogram display options
MacRumors reports three histogram views and says tapping the histogram cycles among them. Apple’s support guide confirms access to the histogram but does not list these display modes, so treat the mode descriptions below as details reported by MacRumors rather than Apple’s published instructions. MacRumors’ iPhone 18 Pro histogram guide explains them as follows:

How the histogram fits with other camera controls
Apple says the Pro controls experience also provides manual adjustments such as aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. Its guide lists Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, and Time-Lapse for those manual adjustments; that does not establish that every control behaves identically or is available in every mode. For Apple’s mode-specific instructions, see its advanced camera tools guide.
