You can move photos, videos, and other files to a microSD card on a compatible Android device. Moving an installed app is more limited: it works only when the device and app support it and the relevant setting appears. Before formatting or changing how a card is used, back it up—formatting erases its data.

Check whether your Android device supports a microSD card

First confirm that your exact phone or tablet has a microSD card slot. The presence of Android alone does not guarantee one: Samsung says microSD support varies by Galaxy model. Check the device maker’s guidance for the model’s maximum supported capacity and card requirements before buying or formatting a card. Samsung lists microSD capacity up to 2 GB, microSDHC up to 32 GB, and microSDXC over 32 GB up to 2 TB; those card-class limits do not guarantee that a particular device supports every card in the range. Samsung’s microSD and Galaxy guidance is model-sensitive.

Choose portable or internal storage

When Android detects a card, it may offer a choice of how to format it. The right option depends on whether you want a removable card for files or app storage tied to this device. Google’s setup labels include “Format” for portable storage and “Format another way” for internal storage; wording and menus can vary by device.

Storage mode What it is for Can the card move between devices? Can apps be installed on it?
Portable storage Files such as photos and videos Yes, according to Google No, according to Google
Internal (adoptable) storage Files and app installation on supported devices No, according to Google Yes, where the device supports it

These behaviors are described in Google’s SD card setup guide. Samsung says its Android devices do not support Android’s adoptable-storage feature, so Galaxy users should not expect that option to appear.

Back up the card before formatting

Formatting permanently deletes the card’s data. Copy anything you want to keep to another location before formatting or changing storage mode. Google’s SD card instructions explain the setup and reformatting flows; Samsung’s formatting path for supported software is Settings > Battery and device care > Storage > SD card > More options > Format. Exact labels and paths vary by model and software version.

For a newly detected card, Android’s documented flow is to tap the SD card notification, choose the storage mode, and select whether to move content now or later. To change a card’s mode later, Google documents options under Settings > Storage > SD card and storage settings. If the menu differs, use the device maker’s instructions for your model rather than assuming the same path applies everywhere.

Move photos, videos, downloads, and other files

Moving files is separate from relocating an installed app. The following methods move selected files to a folder on the card.

Move an installed app only if Android offers the option

App relocation is not a universal Android feature. On a Galaxy model that supports microSD, Samsung documents this path for an eligible app:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps.
  2. Select the app, then tap Storage.
  3. If Change appears, tap it, choose SD card, and tap Move.

If Change is absent, Samsung says that app cannot be moved. The app developer may disallow SD-card storage, and Samsung gives preloaded apps as an example of apps that cannot be moved. Even when relocation is available, do not assume it moves every piece of app data or that the app will behave identically from removable storage. For other Android manufacturers, check the device maker’s support page and the app’s storage settings; the Galaxy path does not establish that another device has the same feature.

If the SD card or move option does not appear

  • No card notification or SD card menu: Confirm the exact device has a microSD slot and that the card is seated correctly. Check the manufacturer’s model-specific compatibility and capacity requirements.
  • No “Change” control for an app: The device or app is not exposing app relocation for that app. Use the card for files instead of relying on unsupported workarounds.
  • Files app cannot find the card: Check the app’s storage-device list and the Android storage settings. Menu names differ by device and software version.
  • Considering another storage mode: Back up the card first. Formatting to change modes erases its contents, and a card formatted as internal storage is not intended to move between devices.
