A question-and-answer (Q&A) site is an online service where people post questions and other users contribute answers. Questions and their answers are the site’s primary way of organizing content. Depending on the service, users or moderators may review, edit, vote on, or otherwise organize contributions.
How does a Q&A site work?
- Someone posts a question. The site may organize it under a subject, topic, or dedicated community.
- Other users contribute answers. A question can receive one answer or many, depending on participation and site rules.
- The platform or community organizes contributions. Some sites use review, editing, voting, moderation, or other policies to shape what appears or is considered useful. These features vary; no single mechanism is required for a site to count as Q&A.
The format can support practical, focused questions as well as broader exchanges of knowledge and perspective. The scope and rules of each site determine which questions fit.
Examples of question-and-answer sites
Quora
Quora describes itself as a community for asking and answering questions. Its help center puts the core interaction simply: “Quora works by having the community ask and answer questions.” Quora’s getting-started guide explains the service, while its Question and Answer Policies describe relevant rules.
Stack Exchange
Stack Exchange is a network of topic-focused Q&A communities. Its Area 51 overview describes a process in which questions receive community review and revision and can attract proposed answers. The network’s official overview currently reports 173 communities and more than 100 million monthly visitors; those are figures displayed on that page, not permanent counts.

- Package Quantity :1
- In contrast to traditional trivia formats, you don't receive points for answering questions correctly. Instead, points are subtracted for every incorrect answer!
- Contains 110 cards with more than 400 questions about things that you should know
- An addictively entertaining trivia game where it will only be a matter of time before you hear yourself say ahhh!... I should have known that!
Stack Overflow
Stack Overflow is a programming-focused Q&A site with explicit rules about what questions belong there. For example, its help center excludes some requests for off-site recommendations. Its on-topic guidance is a useful reminder to check a community’s scope before posting; that rule is specific to Stack Overflow, not a universal Q&A policy.
How is a Q&A site different from a forum?
A practical distinction is the primary structure: Q&A sites center a question and its answers, while forums often organize broader threaded discussions. The categories can overlap. A forum thread may contain questions and answers, and a Q&A community may allow discussion around an answer. It is more useful to look at how a particular site organizes participation than to treat the labels as mutually exclusive.

What should you consider before asking a question?
- Subject coverage: Is the site broad, or is it intended for a specific topic such as programming?
- Expected outcome: Are you looking for a focused answer, several viewpoints, or an open discussion?
- How contributions are surfaced: Check whether answers are reviewed, revised, voted on, or organized in another way.
- Participation rules: Read the community’s scope and posting policies. A question that works on one service may be off-topic on another.
For a site-specific illustration, Stack Overflow’s on-topic rules explain what its programming community accepts and excludes.
Are all Q&A sites moderated or built around voting?
No. Sites use different combinations of community review, revision, voting, topic policies, and moderation. Some may use a single accepted answer or reputation systems, while others may not. These are possible design choices, not defining requirements of every Q&A site. A study of the format and Quora is available in A study of Quora and question-and-answer sites.

- TRIVIA FOR EVERYONE: NEW! UPDATED FOR 2026. Unique to Amazon, we’ve created a game for both trivia and non-trivia people alike. We’ve taken feedback from people that both love and hate trivia, designing a game with classical general knowledge questions, like “How many hearts does an Octopus have?” and fun entertaining questions like “Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” Questions are meticulously curated so subject matter is suitable for adults, teens, and families.
- 1500+ QUESTIONS: While most other Amazon quiz games have a paltry 400-500 questions, we supercharge the fun with over 1500 questions spanning an incredibly large array of topics! Trivia For Everyone contains 190 cards with 1520 questions, requires 2 or more players, and is suitable for those 14 years and older.
- 2 DIFFICULTIES: Unlike other Amazon trivia games that have one level of difficulty, we provide 2! Party Mode is for more accessible questions with lower difficulty and Expert Mode covers more obscure and challenging topics. Trivia for Everyone allows you to play the game the way you want to!
- 3 WAYS TO PLAY: Rather than just having one set way to play like most Amazon games, Trivia for Everyone includes three different modes of play. Free-For-All is designed for fast, competitive play. Question Master is more suited for relaxed play that can take place while socializing. Teams allows you to combine with your friends in a group to take out the competition.
- INNOVATIVE CARD DESIGN: Unlike other Amazon card games which use drab cards that spoil the answer for the reader, we’ve engineered beautiful multi-colored cards that don’t immediately give away the answer and allow for smooth play. It’s simple. Easier questions are in blue; their answers are on the other side of the card, also in blue. Harder questions are in red; their answers are on the other side of the card, also in red. No learning curve required!
