To reduce the risk of Tumblr flagging your content, label mature posts accurately, use relevant tags, avoid deceptive or repetitive promotion, and represent yourself honestly. No practice guarantees that a post or blog will avoid moderation. If Tumblr does flag something, use the review or appeal route for that specific action rather than reposting the disputed content or replying to the notice.
What a Tumblr flag means
A flag is a moderation classification or review event, not proof by itself that a report is valid or that your account will be suspended. Tumblr says it checks reports against its rules and does not remove content solely because it is offensive. Its Help Center describes a mix of machine-learning classification and trained human moderation; humans review appeals. See Tumblr’s Content Moderation on Tumblr and Reporting Content guidance.
The right next step depends on what happened: a post may be flagged as explicit, a blog may be marked Mature, or content may be removed and an account or blog suspended. These situations have different review processes.

Label mature content accurately
Tumblr says creators are responsible for adding Content Labels to posts with mature material. Its examples include nudity, sexual themes, strong language, and mature subject matter. A label is not permission to post prohibited content: Tumblr disallows visual depictions of sexually explicit acts and content with an overt focus on genitalia. Read Mature Content for the platform’s current guidance.

Use tags that describe the post
Choose tags that are relevant to the content. Tumblr’s official User Guidelines warn against misleading tags and overloading a post with irrelevant ones; they do not establish a tag-count threshold in the guidance available here. Treat relevance—not a particular number of tags—as the standard.
Avoid deceptive repetition and traffic tactics
Do not flood replies, messages, or communities with substantially repeated promotional copy, misleading links, or revenue-seeking posts. Tumblr’s community guidance distinguishes ordinary similarities between posts from malicious deceptive spam. It identifies attempts to deceive members to generate revenue or traffic, and community posts whose primary purpose is affiliate marketing, as spam concerns. See Moderating Communities.
If you use affiliate links, make them secondary to useful original content and be transparent about them. Tumblr says creators can use their own affiliate links, but a blog should not have affiliate marketing as its primary purpose. Tumblr may add its own affiliate code to links to participating merchants when the feature is enabled and the creator has not used a personal affiliate code; Tumblr says its link monetization does not currently share revenue with creators. It also says affiliate links do not affect search or recommendations. See Affiliate Links on Tumblr.
Represent yourself honestly
Do not impersonate another person or use intentionally misleading identity details. If an account is parody, make that clear and avoid names or URLs likely to confuse people. Tumblr’s official German-language User Guidelines, last changed May 13, 2025, provide accessible policy detail on impersonation and misleading behavior; consult the current English User Guidelines for the applicable wording.
Keep your account and posts clear
- Post from the blog intended for the content and use the appropriate post format.
- Keep the email associated with your account current so you can receive moderation notices and pursue an appeal.
- If a post is flagged, use the official review process or remove content that violates the rules. Avoid repeatedly reposting disputed material while a review is pending.
These steps can reduce avoidable policy and spam signals, but they cannot guarantee a particular moderation outcome.
Choose the right response to a flag
| What happened | What to do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| A post is flagged as explicit | The original poster can request review through “Review flagged posts” in the affected blog’s settings. | Reblogs cannot be appealed by the reblogger. A post already reviewed by an expert cannot be appealed again. |
| Your blog is marked Mature | Use Tumblr Support and choose “My blog was incorrectly marked as explicit or mature” if the classification is mistaken. | Mature status is not the same as suspension or account termination. |
| Content is removed or your account or blog is suspended | Use the support appeal route if you believe the decision was mistaken. | Do not reply to the removal notice as a substitute for an appeal. Tumblr allows up to six months from the initial moderation decision to submit one. |
| You want to report someone else’s content | Use the relevant report flow for the post, message, blog, or community. | A report is not a final finding or a guarantee that content will be removed. |
Request review of an explicitly flagged post
- Open the affected blog’s flagged-post list. On desktop, open the Account tab, choose the blog, and select “Review flagged posts.” On mobile, open the account tab, tap the settings gear, then “Review flagged posts.” Tumblr’s Appealing Content Flagged as Explicit guide describes these paths.
- Select the post and request review. Use “Appeal” or “Review” if you believe Tumblr classified the post incorrectly. You can check the review status from the flagged-post list.
- Use the result appropriately. If the content violates Tumblr’s rules, edit or delete it rather than appealing a correct classification. Only the original poster can appeal an explicit-content flag; a reblogger cannot appeal a flagged reblog.
If an expert has already reviewed the post, Tumblr says there is no further appeal option for that post.

Tumblr says a blog may be automatically classified as Mature if it shares mature content without appropriate Content Labels. If the classification is wrong, submit a support request and choose “My blog was incorrectly marked as explicit or mature.” Briefly explain why, select the relevant blog, and confirm the email associated with the account. Mature classification can affect visibility for users under 18 and may blur blog imagery; it does not by itself mean the blog has been removed. The applicable support route is described in Appeals on Tumblr.

Appeal removed content or a suspended account or blog
- Read the notice and check your account email. Identify the content or account action Tumblr says it moderated.
- Submit an appeal through Tumblr Support. Use the support appeal route if you believe the decision was mistaken and the content does not violate Tumblr’s User Guidelines or Terms.
- Explain the issue briefly and factually. Identify the decision and relevant content, then connect your explanation to the applicable rule. Keep the account email current so Tumblr can contact you.
Do not reply directly to the original notification: Tumblr says replies will not reach the appeals team. The Help Center says, “You can submit an appeal up to 6 months after our initial moderation decision.” That is the filing window, not an estimate of review time or a promise that Tumblr will reverse the decision. Appeals are reviewed by humans. See Appeals on Tumblr.
Report content from another account
Reporting someone else’s post, blog, message, or community is separate from appealing a decision about your own content. Choose the relevant reporting flow and provide the requested post or blog URL and context. Tumblr’s Reporting Spam and Reporting Content instructions explain the available routes. Tumblr reviews reports against its rules; filing one does not guarantee removal.
