The fastest practical way to start learning Spring Boot is to build its official simple web application, then change it and add one feature at a time. Begin with the Spring Getting Started guide; use Spring Initializr to generate a project when you’re ready to see how its build file, dependencies, and source tree fit together.
Start with a working web application
The official Building an Application with Spring Boot guide walks you through creating a simple web application. The page estimates about 15 minutes and states requirements of Java 17 or later and either Gradle 7.5+ or Maven 3.5+. Those are the guide’s listed prerequisites, not a guarantee that they suit every Spring Boot version or project; check the live page before starting.
You can work through the setup and application steps, or use the guide’s initial and complete sample projects to skip material you already understand and compare your work with a finished result. Choose the first route if you want practice configuring a project; choose the sample route if your immediate goal is to focus on the application code.
Generate a project and inspect what it contains
Spring Initializr generates JVM projects from choices such as build system, language, packaging, platform version, project coordinates, and dependencies. The official guide uses it to select a build system and language, add Spring Web, and download a ZIP project. Project generation gets you to a starting point; understanding the generated files is part of the exercise.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose Maven or Gradle and the language you plan to use.
- Select Spring Web for the web application exercise, then generate and download the project.
- Open the extracted project in your IDE or editor. Look through the source tree and find the application class and controller.
- Open the build file, identify the Spring Web dependency, and note how the selected build system declares dependencies.
- Run the application using the guide’s instructions, then make one small change and run it again.
Initializr can also be used through IDE integrations. Whether you generate in a browser or through an IDE, treat the generated project as code to inspect and modify, not as a black box.
Change one behavior before adding more features
Once the first app runs, edit the controller’s response or add a small endpoint. Restart or rerun the application and check the result. A single visible change connects the controller, the running app, and the output you observe without adding several new concepts at once.
Rank #2
If the result differs from what you expect, check that you edited the controller used by the app, that the application restarted with your change, and that you are requesting the endpoint you changed. Compare your project with the guide’s complete sample if you need a known reference point.

After the small web app, add one concern at a time. The Spring Guides catalog has practical projects covering these areas:
Rank #3
- REST: build an API-oriented exercise and practice exposing application behavior through endpoints.
- Data access: add persistence so you can learn how an application works with data.
- Testing: create tests for behavior you have already implemented.
- Security: explore how access to application features is protected.
- Messaging: practice a message-driven interaction.
- Deployment: learn how to package or run an application beyond the initial local exercise.
Pick the next guide based on a question raised by your current project. For example, if you need to keep data between runs, choose a data-access exercise; if you want confidence that a controller still behaves as expected after edits, try testing. Avoid adding several unfamiliar concerns to the same beginner project at once.
Use the documentation as a lookup map
The Spring Boot documentation overview organizes material around first steps and tutorials, running examples, build systems, code structure and configuration, running code in an IDE or with Maven or Gradle, and packaging. Use that structure to find answers as your project raises questions; it is not necessary to read the reference guide from beginning to end before building anything.
Rank #4
The official Developing Your First Spring Boot Application tutorial is another first-application reference. Since it is specifically under the Spring Boot 3.4 documentation path, check that version’s relevance to the project you are building before applying its details.
Pick the starting route that matches your goal
| Approach | Best fit | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| Build from scratch using the guide | You want practice with setup and project structure. | Follow the steps, then inspect the generated files and make a change. |
| Start from the guide’s preconfigured example | You already know the setup or want to reach the application code sooner. | Focus on the application steps and compare your result with the complete sample. |
| Generate a comparable project with Initializr | You want to practice making project choices yourself or use an IDE integration. | Select the build system and dependency, then inspect the generated source and build configuration. |
These routes can be combined: use the guide to get a known working result, then generate a fresh project to understand how its choices shape the files you receive.
Quick Recap
A practical stopping point for the first session
- The web application runs on your machine.
- You can locate its application class, controller, and build file.
- You can identify the web dependency and make one behavior change.
- You have chosen one focused next exercise, rather than trying to learn every Spring Boot feature at once.
