To block a sender in Gmail, open one of their messages, select More, then choose Block [sender]. Gmail sends future messages from that sender to Spam; blocking does not stop the sender from sending mail or unsubscribe you from a mailing list.
Block an email address in Gmail
These steps apply to Gmail email. Blocking someone in Google Chat is a separate action and does not block their email address.
On a computer
- Open Gmail and open a message from the sender you want to block.
- At the top right of the message, beside Reply, click More.
- Select Block [sender].
In the Gmail app
- Open the Gmail app and open a message from the sender.
- At the top right, tap More.
- Tap Block [sender].
Google documents this app flow for Android and iPhone or iPad. The menu wording may vary slightly by device or interface version. See Google’s instructions for blocking and unblocking email addresses.
What happens when you block a sender?
Gmail sends future emails from that sender to Spam. Blocking changes how Gmail handles those messages; it does not delete the sender’s earlier emails or prevent the sender from sending new ones.

Unblock a sender
From one of their messages
Open a message from the sender, click or tap More, then choose Unblock [sender].
From Gmail settings on a computer
- Click Settings, then See all settings.
- Open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
- Select the sender and click Unblock selected addresses.
After unblocking, future messages from the sender go to your inbox. If a message still appears in Spam, follow Google’s guidance for handling a valid message there; unblocking does not guarantee that earlier messages in Spam will be restored to your inbox.

Should you block, unsubscribe, or report the message?

| Keep a particular sender’s future email out of your inbox | Block sender | Routes future messages from that sender to Spam. It does not cancel a mailing-list subscription. |
| Stop receiving a newsletter or promotional mailing list | Unsubscribe | Gmail’s Manage subscriptions feature can unsubscribe you from active mailing lists related to a sender where the feature is available. It is gradually rolling out, and an unsubscribe may take a few days to take effect. |
