Visual Studio Code can bring a surprising amount of software-development work into one place: editing and navigating project files, running shell commands, managing Git changes, debugging, testing, and automating recurring tasks. That can mean fewer context switches between tools—but it does not make VS Code a replacement for every kind of productivity app, and the capabilities you get depend partly on extensions and installed software.
What VS Code brings together
VS Code is more than a text editor: it is a development workbench organized around a project. Its core feature set includes code editing and navigation, code intelligence, an integrated terminal, source control, debugging, and test support. The exact language features available in a project depend on its language support and installed extensions. Microsoft’s overview of core editor features describes these parts of the workbench.
The practical benefit is proximity. You can move from a source file to a command, inspect a change, or start a debugging session without opening a separate application for each step. This is workflow consolidation for software development, not evidence that VS Code replaces a particular number of apps or makes everyone more productive.

Where it can reduce tool switching
Writing and navigating code
The editor is the center of the workflow: open a project, work across its files, and use code intelligence and navigation features supported by the language tools in that setup. Those features are not identical for every language or project; an extension may be needed to provide additional language support.

Running commands and recurring tasks
The integrated terminal runs shells and command-line tools inside the VS Code workbench. You can use multiple terminals and configure shell profiles, which makes it possible to keep project commands close to the files they operate on. See Microsoft’s terminal profiles documentation.
For commands you repeat, VS Code tasks can run scripts and processes such as builds, linting, tests, or deployment commands. That can turn a sequence you would otherwise launch manually in a terminal into an editor task. Tasks connect VS Code to external command-line tools; they do not remove the need to install or configure those tools. The setup and examples are covered in Integrate with External Tools via Tasks.

Reviewing and committing changes
VS Code’s source-control view supports common Git work, including reviewing changes, staging files, committing, managing branches, and resolving merge conflicts. The editor and command-line Git work with the same repository. Git itself is separate software and must be installed independently. Microsoft explains the workflow in Source control in VS Code and notes additional components in Additional components and tools.
Debugging and testing
Debugging and test workflows are part of the workbench, but the available experience depends on the language, debugger, and extensions configured for the project. In other words, VS Code provides a place to work with these capabilities; it does not mean every project arrives with a ready-to-use debugger or test setup.

What is included—and what depends on your setup
| Workflow area | What VS Code provides | What may need separate setup |
|---|---|---|
| Editing and code navigation | Core editor and code-intelligence features | Language-specific support and extensions, depending on the project |
| Terminal and commands | Integrated terminal, multiple terminals, configurable shell profiles | The shell and command-line tools you want to run |
| Recurring processes | Tasks for running scripts and processes such as builds, linting, and tests | The external scripts or tools being invoked and their configuration |
| Git source control | Reviewing, staging, committing, branch management, and merge-conflict resolution | Git must be installed separately |
| Debugging and tests | Workbench support for debugging and test workflows | Project-specific language support, debugger, test tools, or extensions |
| Remote development | Work with containers, remote machines, and WSL | Environment setup and compatible extension support may vary |
How extensions and profiles shape the workbench
Extensions can add language support, debuggers, source-control providers, and connections to external tools. That flexibility is also why no two VS Code setups need to have the same capabilities: an extension-dependent feature is not necessarily present in a clean installation. Microsoft’s extensions guide explains how extensions expand the editor.
Profiles let you organize settings and extensions for different projects or tasks. For example, you can keep a focused set of tools for one type of work separate from another profile rather than letting every project share one crowded configuration. See Profiles in Visual Studio Code.

When remote development changes the equation
Some projects need to run in a container, on a remote machine, or in Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), rather than directly on the local computer. VS Code’s Remote Development options let the workbench connect to those environments, so the workflow can operate where the code runs. Setup requirements and extension support can differ by environment; Microsoft outlines the options in its Remote Development overview.

What it does not replace
The strongest case for consolidating around VS Code is a development workflow. Its documented features do not establish that it replaces unrelated general-purpose apps, nor do they prove a measurable productivity gain. Keep other tools when they serve a distinct purpose outside editing, building, source control, debugging, testing, or project commands; use VS Code where bringing those development steps together is useful.
