Sometimes—but a Clear CMOS button or jumper is a settings-reset control, not a guaranteed password bypass. Whether it removes a forgotten BIOS/UEFI firmware setup password depends on the motherboard and how the password was configured. Check the exact board’s manual before trying anything; if its documented reset leaves the password in place, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center.
What the password protects—and what “Clear CMOS” does
A BIOS/UEFI firmware setup password controls access to firmware settings. Some systems also offer a separate user password that may be required to continue to the operating system. ASUS distinguishes these roles: its administrator password protects BIOS settings, while its user password adds a password prompt for entering the operating system. ASUS lists the administrator password’s default state as “Not installed”—a product default, not evidence of how many owners set passwords. ASUS explains the password types and default.
Clear CMOS resets stored firmware settings. Depending on the board and its password configuration, that reset may also clear the setup password. ASUS recommends Clear CMOS for a forgotten password, but MSI notes that password removal depends on an option chosen when the password was set; in some cases the password remains after CMOS is cleared. The presence of a reset button or header therefore does not establish that every password on that board can be removed this way. MSI describes when CMOS clearing may not remove a password.

- Identify the motherboard model. Check the model printed on the board, your system information, or the computer’s original documentation. For a prebuilt computer, identify the system model as well; its firmware procedure may be specific to that machine.
- Open the manufacturer’s manual for that exact model. Look for “Clear CMOS,” “CLR_CMOS,” “Clear RTC RAM,” or similar wording. Use the manual’s location diagram and sequence rather than guessing from a different board or a general video. ASUS, for example, directs users of the covered Intel 500 Series motherboard families to clear CMOS RTC RAM using the Clear CMOS jumper; that guidance is specific to those families. - Confirm whether the manual says the reset clears the password. A manual may explain how to reset settings without promising password removal. If it does not address the password, ask the manufacturer’s support team before proceeding.
Choose only the reset method your manual specifies
Motherboards do not all use the same control. GIGABYTE’s general support guidance describes three possible methods, depending on the board. Its page dates to 2012, so use it to understand the alternatives—not as a substitute for a current, model-specific procedure. GIGABYTE’s forgotten-password guidance.

Before touching a button, jumper, header, or battery, shut down the system and disconnect power exactly as the board’s manual instructs. GIGABYTE’s FAQ specifically says to turn off power and remove the power cord before clearing CMOS. Do not use a jumper cap or tool unless the manual calls for it and shows where it belongs.
What to expect after the reset
A successful CMOS clear restores firmware settings, so settings you previously changed may need to be configured again. Follow the manual to check the boot configuration and any other settings needed for your system. Do not assume the reset leaves every security or firmware setting unchanged; behavior can vary by model.

If the firmware password is still requested, stop repeating generic reset methods. MSI says password clearing depends on the choice made when the password was created, and directs users to its service center when CMOS clearing does not work. MSI also says it does not collect the password. Contact the motherboard maker or the computer manufacturer’s authorized service channel for the next step. MSI’s support guidance.
