If a deep link opens a browser instead of your installed app, lands on the wrong screen, or loses its destination after installation, first identify which part is failing: website-to-app verification, URL matching, app-side routing, or deferred deep linking. Android App Links and iOS Universal Links use verified HTTPS associations; custom URI schemes are a separate mechanism. The right fix depends on your platform, link, and the result you see.
Identify what “deeplink issue” means in your case
Before changing configuration, record the details that distinguish an association problem from a routing problem:
- The full URL, with private tokens or personal data removed.
- Android or iOS, the OS version, and the app build you tested.
- Whether the app was installed, and whether the build is signed for debugging, development, or release.
- Where you tapped the link: for example, a message, Notes, or a browser.
- What happened: the browser opened, an app chooser appeared, the app opened to its home screen, the wrong screen appeared, an error appeared, or the app store opened.
- Whether the URL is a custom scheme or an HTTPS App Link/Universal Link.
These distinctions matter because the operating system first decides whether a URL belongs to an app, while the app must separately interpret that URL and select the right screen.
Fix Android App Links
Check the website association file
Open https://your-domain/.well-known/assetlinks.json directly, replacing your-domain with the actual host in the link. Confirm that the file is valid JSON, served over HTTPS, and available without a redirect. Android’s App Links troubleshooting guide warns that redirects—including HTTP-to-HTTPS or apex-domain-to-www redirects—can prevent verification.

Match the signing certificate
Compare the SHA-256 certificate fingerprint in assetlinks.json with the certificate that signs the app installed on the device. If the release uses Play App Signing, use the release signing certificate Google applies, not automatically the local upload key or debug key. Check the fingerprint formatting as well. A valid file tied to a different signing certificate will not establish the expected association.
Check the manifest filter and URL
Review the app’s intent filter against the exact URL. The filter must match its scheme, host, and relevant path, and the App Link filter should include android:autoVerify="true". Avoid claiming URLs the app does not handle. Android’s deep-link documentation explains how intent filters route matching URLs into activities.

Re-run verification and inspect matching
After correcting the file or manifest, ask Android to re-verify the package:

If verification succeeds but the app opens the wrong screen, inspect the activity’s received intent data and the app’s URI parsing; successful OS-level association does not guarantee correct in-app routing.
Fix iOS Universal Links
Verify both sides of the association
For each domain in use, confirm that the app has the corresponding Associated Domains entitlement and that the website serves an Apple App Site Association (AASA) file establishing the association. Then verify that the app handles the incoming user activity and maps the URL to the intended screen. Apple’s documentation on linking apps and websites to content covers the association and app-handling requirements.

Test by tapping a link, not typing it
Put the URL in a clickable link—for example, in a note—and tap it. Typing or pasting the URL into Safari’s address bar is not a valid Universal Link test: Apple states that direct address-bar navigation will not open the app. A link tapped in Safari while browsing the same domain may also remain in Safari to preserve the user’s browsing context. Retest the same clickable URL from another app before concluding that the association is broken.
Check the AASA response and domain
If association diagnostics fail, inspect the AASA file’s response and contents for the exact domain and path involved. Apple’s TN3155: Debugging universal links says redirects when hosting the AASA file are unsupported. Host the file on each associated domain rather than relying on a redirect, and use Apple’s associated-domain diagnostics or sysdiagnose guidance for harder cases.

If you use Expo
Expo distinguishes custom-scheme links from HTTP(S) Universal Links and App Links. The verified-link approaches require a domain association file. Expo Go has limited support for incoming links, so use a development build for a representative test. Also check the runtime route mapping: Expo Router can enable deep links for screens, but App Links and Universal Links still depend on the runtime configuration matching the URL. If the destination is lost during installation
A link that should preserve a destination while someone installs the app presents a different problem: deferred deep linking. Standard App Links and Universal Links can open an installed app, but do not by themselves reproduce every former Firebase Dynamic Links behavior, such as sending someone to the correct store and continuing the journey to the original content after installation. Firebase explains this distinction in its Dynamic Links migration guide. Treat post-install continuation as a separate architecture or service requirement, and verify a provider’s current capabilities before choosing one.
Separate association failures from routing failures
Use the observed result to narrow the next check:
- Browser opens instead of the installed app: check the Android association file, certificate, and matching filter, or the iOS entitlement and AASA association. Also test from a suitable clickable-link context.
- App opens, but to the wrong screen: the OS may have recognized the link; inspect the incoming URL and app-side route parsing.
- It works in a simulator or development build but not from a real link tap: verify the installed build’s signing identity and platform association, then test from the same kind of app or browser context the user uses.
- The destination disappears after installation: investigate deferred deep linking rather than treating it as an ordinary installed-app association failure.
Without the failing URL, platform and OS version, framework, installation state, link source, and observed result, there is no reliable single code change to recommend.
