The right winter running shoe depends first on where you run: use a road shoe for maintained pavement, a lugged trail shoe for soft or uneven ground, and a shoe with integrated spikes if icy routes are a regular part of your training. Waterproofing can help on wet, slushy routes, but it is not a requirement for every runner or winter run.
Choose for the surface you run on
Keep your usual road-versus-trail preference in winter, then account for weather and traction. A shoe built for one surface may be awkward on another: aggressive lugs intended for mud and soft ground can feel out of place on pavement, while a road outsole is not a substitute for a trail or ice-oriented design.
| Route | What to look for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Maintained roads and sidewalks | A road-oriented shoe with your preferred cushioning and fit; consider a weatherized upper if rain, slush, or puddles are common. | Runner’s World describes the Brooks Ghost 17 GTX as a weatherized road shoe with a GORE-TEX upper. Runner’s World’s winter shoe guide. |
| Mixed road and trail | A versatile shoe that suits the softer or rougher sections without relying on aggressive lugs for ordinary pavement. | Winter options in adidas’s collection vary by model and include weather-resistant uppers, GORE-TEX or RAIN.RDY options, Continental WinterGrip outsole styles, and reflective details. adidas winter trail shoes. |
| Snow-covered, muddy, or soft trail | Trail lugs for uneven and yielding terrain; consider weather protection based on how wet the route gets. | Runner’s World lists the Topo Athletic MTN Racer 4 with 5 mm lugs, a Vibram Megagrip outsole, and gaiter attachment points, while cautioning that its aggressive lugs may not suit road running. Runner’s World’s winter shoe guide. |
| Routes where ice is a regular concern | A specialized design with integrated spikes intended for ice, rather than a standard road shoe. | The Salomon WINTER CROSS SPIKE is a winter trail shoe with carbide-tipped spikes, according to its US product page. Salomon WINTER CROSS SPIKE. |
These examples illustrate different designs, not a ranking from independent testing. Product descriptions explain intended use and features; they do not guarantee grip in every condition or prevent falls.
Decide how much weather protection you need
Weather-resistant uppers
A weather-resistant upper may be enough if your routes are mostly dry and you want some protection from cold wind or light moisture. Features vary by model; adidas’s winter trail collection, for example, includes different upper and outsole technologies rather than one standard specification. Check the current adidas collection for the details of each shoe.

Waterproof membranes
A waterproof membrane is worth considering when your route regularly includes rain, snow, slush, or puddles. RunRepeat frames waterproofing as a wet-weather choice, not a universal requirement. RunRepeat’s waterproof running shoe guide discusses that category. adidas describes GORE-TEX and RAIN.RDY options in some winter trail models, and ASICS says the FUJISETSU MAX GTX uses GORE-TEX Invisible Fit intended to help keep rain and snow out. ASICS FUJISETSU MAX GTX.
Waterproofing is a feature to match to your route, not proof that feet will stay dry in all conditions. Check the current local product listing: models, sizes, and availability can vary by region and change over time.

Match traction to snow, mud, and ice
Trail lugs for soft ground
Lugs are designed to engage with dirt, mud, and soft ground. For a specific example, Salomon’s US product page lists the WINTER CROSS SPIKE with 5 mm lugs, a 4 mm drop, and a weight of 12 oz per unit; these are Salomon’s published product specifications, not independent measurements. The page describes its carbide-tipped spikes as intended to provide grip on ice. See Salomon’s product specifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIntegrated spikes for regular ice
Integrated carbide spikes are a more specialized choice for routes with recurring ice. Salomon describes the WINTER CROSS SPIKE as a winter trail shoe with spikes, while ASICS describes the FUJISETSU MAX GTX as designed for snowy winter trail runs and specifies outsole spikes. See the ASICS product page. Neither manufacturer’s description establishes that a shoe will prevent slipping or falling.
Rank #3
- GRIPS ON SLIPPERY SURFACES: Walk confidently with these slip-on traction cleats designed to evenly distribute underfoot traction across ice- and snow-covered surfaces, as to provide stability on rocky terrain.
- STAYS STRONG IN COLD WEATHER: Thermoplastic rubber sling won't degrade, crack, or fail in cold temperatures for durability that lasts through repeated uses; plus, the thermoplastic is completely recyclable for reduced waste
- 360-DEGREE UNDERFOOT TRACTION: Innovative coil technology provides 360-degree stability when walking forward, backward, or even laterally across snow-packed surfaces
- EASY ON, EASY OFF: Thermoplastic sling with heel tab for easy installation and removal combines the stretchability of rubber for a comfortable fit over a variety of footwear shapes and sizes with the durability of plastic that stays secure when in use
- COMFORTABLE, MULTI-SURFACE TRACTION: Coils are crafted of durable, corrosion- and abrasion-resistant steel that adapts to different terrains, with no sharp edges to damage surfaces, footwear, or equipment.
Spikes are not a default choice for ordinary pavement. Base the decision on the actual route: a shoe specialized for ice serves a different purpose from a road shoe or a lugged trail shoe.
Check fit, cushioning, and socks
Winter footwear still needs to fit your foot and suit your preferred ride. Compare width and toe room, and choose the cushioning and drop that feel right for your running. Try shoes with the socks you expect to wear in cold weather: Altra notes that a roomier toe box can accommodate thicker or wool socks. Altra’s winter running guidance.
Rank #4
- SIZE: M [5.7*8.5 inch (US WOMEN:7-10/ US MEN:5-8, UK Size 4-7, EUR Size 35-39)] **Fit for Men/Women , prevent slipping on snow and ice conditions, Anti Slip Crampons Slip-on Stretch Footwear
- High-elasticity TPE Material: Made of durable silicone rubber thermoplastic elastomer+ special non-slip steel studs, it is more durable and not easy to break than ordinary TPE material. The ice snow grips is suitable for most shoes or boots. Till strong perform under -45 degree C
- The special Ground-gripping steel studs offer excellent traction on ice and snow. Studs are the wear item, so every box includes 5 spare studs. Replacement studs built for this exact cleat are sold separately on this listing and fit Aliglow cleats only.
- Light weight constructions and folds up to fit in your pocket.
- Easy on/off to fit boots, sneakers, casual and dress shoes--Great for ice fishing, hunting, walking, jogging, climbing, hiking, running, snow shoveling, etc
Do not assume that waterproofing, deeper lugs, or spikes make an otherwise poor fit work. Allow enough room for your planned socks without letting the shoe feel loose or unstable.

Consider accessories only if they solve a route problem
Warm running socks can add insulation, and compatible trail gaiters can help keep slush or debris out. Both are optional: check shoe fit with the socks you plan to use, and make sure a gaiter is compatible with the shoe’s attachment system. Altra discusses room for thicker socks, while Runner’s World notes gaiter attachment points on the Topo Athletic MTN Racer 4. Altra’s winter running guidance; Runner’s World guide.
