A PubMed-indexed study result reports that traffic fatalities were, on average, 14.3% higher on the day after the 10 deadliest shootings in its 2008–2023 sample—an estimated 19.9 additional deaths nationally (95% confidence interval: 12.7–27.1). That is a reported short-term association, not proof that shootings caused crashes or that the increase follows every mass shooting.
What the study found—and the scope of the estimate
The study authors reported the next-day increase using traffic-fatality data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS). The estimate applies to the day after a selected set of 10 especially deadly shootings between 2008 and 2023. It is not an annual total, a long-term trend, or an estimate for every shooting.
The reported 14.3% average increase corresponds to 19.9 additional traffic deaths nationally, with a 95% confidence interval of 12.7 to 27.1 additional deaths. A confidence interval conveys uncertainty around the estimate; it does not mean that the same number of extra deaths occurred after each event.
What does a next-day increase mean?
An association, not a demonstrated cause
The result describes a difference in traffic fatalities after the sampled events. By itself, it does not establish that the shootings caused that difference. The available study summary does not establish the exact rule used to select the 10 shootings, the model specification, which potential confounders were adjusted for, or a mechanism linking the events to traffic deaths. Without those details, stronger causal claims are not supported.

A narrow time window
The reported comparison concerns the day after a shooting. It should not be extended to later days or presented as evidence of a persistent rise in road deaths. Nor does the estimate show that a particular shooting will be followed by a predictable number of traffic fatalities.
Why “mass shooting” counts can differ
There is no single universal threshold for a mass shooting. A 2024 U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory contrasts two definitions: a Congressional Research Service definition it cites, based on at least four firearm-killed victims, and a Gun Violence Archive definition it cites, based on four or more people shot or killed, excluding the shooter. One counts fatal events meeting a victim threshold; the other also includes events in which fewer than four people die.

These categories answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable. The study’s selection of the 10 deadliest shootings is also not a general count of mass shootings under either definition.

How the broader numbers fit—and what they do not show
The Surgeon General’s 2024 advisory, summarizing Gun Violence Archive data under its broader definition, reported more than 600 mass-shooting incidents annually in 2020–2023, compared with an average below 400 annually in 2015–2018. The advisory also estimated that mass-shooting deaths represented about 1% of firearm-related deaths under the definitions and source data described in its notes. Neither figure is an FBI active-shooter count, and neither measures traffic deaths.

The FBI reported 24 active-shooter incidents in 2024, down from 48 in 2023. These are counts under the FBI’s definition, not a competing tally of all events called mass shootings by other sources.
For context, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported more than 48,000 firearm-related deaths in 2022; more than half were suicides and more than four in ten were firearm homicides. Those totals cover firearm deaths broadly. They are not counts of mass-shooting victims and should not be used as a substitute for one.

How to compare traffic and firearm statistics responsibly
Before comparing totals, check that the figures cover the same population and measure the same outcome. A count of all firearm deaths is different from firearm homicides, deaths in incidents meeting a chosen mass-shooting definition, or traffic fatalities. Counts also differ from rates, which relate deaths to a population or another denominator.

- Match the scope. Identify the years, geography, age range, and whether the figure is a count or a rate.
- Keep outcomes separate. Do not add or compare firearm deaths and traffic deaths as though they were the same category.
- Keep the study window visible. The reported traffic estimate is for the day after 10 selected shootings, not an annual or population-wide effect.
The CDC’s WISQARS interface can compare selected causes of injury death and years. It notes that some estimates may be unstable or suppressed, so not every displayed value supports a reliable comparison.
