Chrome can appear to work while DNS lookups fail because a page may use cached resolution or a different name-resolution path. But the specific claims in the headline—that Wi-Fi was down for five hours, Chrome kept working throughout, and there were 4,960 DNS failures—are not verified by the available published sources. Treat them as reported incident details unless timestamped logs and a clear counting method support them.
What the reported incident does—and does not—establish
The figures “5 hours” and “4,960 DNS failures” should not be presented as confirmed measurements without the underlying logs. Verification would require timestamps, the device and resolver involved, the query and failure definitions, and evidence showing what “Chrome kept working” meant—for example, whether existing pages loaded, new hostnames resolved, or only some sites were reachable.
There is also no evidence that this particular Wi-Fi connection failed for five hours. A DNS resolution failure is not the same thing as a Wi-Fi outage: name resolution can fail while a device remains connected to a network, and connectivity symptoms alone do not identify the failing layer.
How Chrome can appear to work while DNS is failing
“Chrome worked” does not prove that every DNS lookup was healthy. Chromium documents multiple host-resolution mechanisms, including browser-level caching and system host resolution. Its DNS prefetching can resolve names on external threads and warm the operating system’s cache. As a result, a page may load using an answer already available to the browser or operating system even while a new lookup, or a lookup through another path, fails. These are plausible explanations, not a diagnosis of this reported incident.

Chrome can also be configured to use DNS over HTTPS (DoH), an encrypted DNS path. Whether Chrome used DoH here is unknown; the browser configuration and applicable policies would need to be checked. A browser’s successful page load, by itself, cannot tell you whether the system resolver, browser DoH, or all DNS lookups are healthy.
What counts as a DNS failure
The distinction matters when counting failures. RFC 9520, published by the IETF in December 2023, defines a resolution failure as a query for which available servers provide no useful response. It treats valid negative responses such as NXDOMAIN (the name does not exist) and NODATA (the name exists but has no requested record) as useful answers, not resolution failures. A counter that labels every unsuccessful-looking result a “DNS failure” may therefore combine different outcomes.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
RFC 9520 also sets requirements for resolver behavior, not for consumer monitoring schedules. A resolver must cache a resolution failure for at least one second and no longer than five minutes, and should use linear or exponential backoff for persistent failures. It must not retry the same query to the same server address over the same transport more than twice before considering that server unresponsive for that query. These rules can affect repeated failures and recovery, but they do not establish what happened on a particular device or prescribe a five-minute probe interval.

What a five-minute probe can tell you
A probe run every five minutes is a sampling choice, not a standard-defined DNS test. If an outage begins just after a successful check, the next scheduled check may not observe it for almost five minutes, before processing or alert-delivery time. More frequent checks can shorten that potential delay, but increase query volume. The right cadence depends on how quickly you need to notice a failure and how much checking is appropriate for the resolver and endpoints involved.

To make results useful, a probe should record distinct observations rather than reduce everything to “internet up” or “down”:
- Name resolution: Resolve one or more stable hostnames through the resolver path you intend to monitor. Log the timestamp, hostname, record type, resolver, response code, elapsed time, and timeout or error details.
- IP reachability: Separately check a known IP endpoint. This helps distinguish a failed name lookup from a broader loss of network reachability; a successful IP check does not prove DNS is healthy.
- Path and context: Record the network interface and probe version. If comparing the system resolver with browser DoH, label and log those as separate paths, including the relevant configuration.
- Counting rules: Define which outcomes count as failures, how transient errors are classified, and whether retries count as separate failures. Preserve results such as timeouts, NXDOMAIN, NODATA, and SERVFAIL distinctly rather than silently combining them.
A five-minute probe cannot guarantee that it catches every DNS failure. Its value depends on the query, resolver path, failure definition, and logging; no implementation or execution results are available for the probe named in the headline.

Why stale DNS answers can complicate recovery
Recursive resolvers may serve stale DNS data when they cannot refresh an answer. RFC 8767, published by the IETF in April 2020, describes this resilience behavior. A stale answer can keep a service reachable during an authority outage, while also delaying recognition of changed DNS data. The RFC’s example method recommends attempting refreshes from non-responsive authorities no more frequently than every 30 seconds; that is resolver guidance, not an end-user probe schedule.
How to interpret a log of apparent failures
When reviewing a claimed total such as 4,960, first establish what each counted event represents. A resolver timeout, a valid NXDOMAIN response, a repeated retry, and a failed IP connection are not interchangeable observations. Then compare the timestamps against the resolver path and reachability checks. Without those details, the total cannot show whether DNS alone failed, how often independent failures occurred, or whether Chrome’s apparent success relied on cached data.
