Before paying for more Google Photos storage, check what is using your Google Account space and review Google’s cleanup suggestions. Photos shares storage with Gmail and Drive, so deleting photos may not solve the problem. If you do remove cloud files, make sure you are not deleting your only copy.

First, check what is using your Google Account storage

Google says a standard Google Account includes up to 15 GB at no charge, shared across Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. Your available amount can differ depending on your account or plan. Check the storage breakdown in Google Photos or Google One before deciding what to delete. Google’s storage overview explains what counts toward the quota.

If Gmail or Drive accounts for most of your usage, deleting photos may reclaim little or no space. When an account reaches its limit, Google says Photos backups and some Drive and Gmail functions can be affected.

Use Google’s storage manager to choose what to remove

On Android, Google documents this path: Google Photos > profile picture > Photos settings > Backup > Manage storage. Labels and availability can vary by app version and account type. You can also check storage through Google One. The manager may suggest categories such as large photos and videos, blurry photos, and screenshots. Review the items and any estimated space recovery shown before deleting; some Photos items do not count toward your quota, so removing them will not necessarily free account storage. Google’s Android storage-management instructions describe the process.

Delete only what you no longer need

Choose items individually or by suggested category, and make sure the selections are genuinely expendable. Items moved to Google Photos trash are permanently deleted after 30 days. Once content is permanently deleted, Google says it cannot be recovered through Google Takeout. Deletion behavior differs in Drive and Gmail, so check the relevant service before emptying its trash.

Understand what Storage saver does—and does not do

Storage saver can reduce backup size compared with Original quality, but it is not a blanket exemption from Google Account storage. New Google Photos backups generally count toward the shared quota. Qualifying Storage saver (formerly High quality) or Express uploads made before June 1, 2021 are exempt; Original quality backups count regardless of upload date. Google’s storage policy details explain the distinctions.

Changing backup quality is not the same as deleting files or automatically converting every existing item. Check the current setting and the storage details for your account before expecting a change to reclaim space. Google One’s storage tips also discuss backup-quality options.

Keep a separate archive before removing cloud copies

If you want an independent copy of your library, download your photos and videos to a computer first. Google documents downloading data as a way to keep a copy. If you then move that archive to an external drive, verify that the files open and the archive is complete before deleting cloud copies. A local copy by itself does not free Google Account storage; only removing quota-counting cloud data does that.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal

Keep in mind the trade-off: once cloud copies are deleted, they are no longer available through Google Photos. A verified local archive can reduce the risk of losing the only copy, but it requires space, organization, and occasional checks of the storage device.

Choose the option that fits your library

Option Quota effect Quality and access Main trade-off
Review and delete unwanted items Reclaims space only when deleted items count toward the quota Deleted items are no longer available in Photos after permanent deletion Free, but requires careful review
Use Storage saver for backups Can reduce the size of backups; does not exempt new backups from the quota Prioritizes space over Original quality Backup quality is the trade-off; it does not remove existing files automatically
Download a separate archive Does not reclaim space unless you later remove quota-counting cloud copies Provides a separate local copy; removed cloud files are no longer cloud-accessible Requires downloading, storage capacity, and verification
Upgrade Google One storage Adds paid storage capacity Keeps the cloud workflow Recurring cost; plans and prices vary by region and can change

When paying for more storage makes sense

If you have reviewed Photos, Drive, and Gmail and still need more space, a Google One plan is a straightforward fallback. Google’s US help page listed 100 GB for $1.99 per month when checked in 2026; this is a region- and time-sensitive example, not a guaranteed current price elsewhere. Check the plan and price displayed for your account and region before subscribing. Google’s storage page describes the paid-storage option.
