In Apple Messages on iPhone, double-tap a message or touch and hold it, then tap a Tapback reaction. Swipe left to see suggested emoji and stickers, or open Emoji or Live Stickers for more choices. Your reaction attaches to that message and is visible to everyone in the conversation.
How to add a Tapback to a message
- Open Messages and select the conversation.
- Double-tap the message you want to react to, or touch and hold it.
- Swipe left to browse suggested emoji and stickers. For more choices, tap Emoji to select an emoji or Live Stickers to choose a sticker.
- Tap the reaction you want to add. It appears attached to that specific message, where everyone in the conversation can see it.
Apple lists reactions such as a heart, thumbs-up, thumbs-down, laughter, exclamation marks and a question mark, as well as emoji, Memoji and stickers. The quick suggestions are not the only choices. The exact interface may change with iOS updates; see Apple’s Tapbacks guide for iPhone.

Choose a reaction that fits your meaning
Pick the reaction that communicates what you intend in the context of the conversation. A thumbs-up can acknowledge a message, a heart can signal affection or appreciation, laughter can respond to something funny, and a question mark can indicate that you have a question. These are practical interpretations, not an Apple ranking or a set of required etiquette rules.

How to see who reacted
If a message has multiple Tapbacks, they appear in a stack. Tap the stack to see the senders and their Tapbacks near the top of the screen.

How to change or remove your Tapback
You can edit or remove only a Tapback you added—not someone else’s.
- Change yours: Tap your Tapback, then choose a different emoji, Memoji or sticker.
- Remove yours: Tap the same Tapback again.
Apple’s guide says you can add only one Tapback per message. If you want to send additional stickers, place them on the conversation instead. For the full set of steps, consult Apple’s iPhone Tapbacks instructions.

What recipients can see
A Tapback is tied to one message, and everyone who is part of that conversation can see it, according to Apple Support. Apple’s general guide to sending and replying to messages on iPhone also describes touching and holding a message to react with a Tapback. The cited instructions do not establish how Tapbacks behave for every message type or recipient platform, so compatibility should not be assumed in every conversation.
